๐Ÿ’Ž Coping Thoughts. ๐Ÿ’Ž

๐Ÿ’Ž Here is a list of some coping thoughts that people have found helpful (McKay, Davis, & Fanning, 1997).
๐Ÿ’Ž Check the ones that are helpful to you and also create your own.
-------------------------------------------------------------
๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œThis situation wonโ€™t last forever.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œIโ€™ve already been through many other painful experiences, and Iโ€™ve survived.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œThis too shall pass.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œMy feelings make me uncomfortable right now, but I can accept them.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œI can be anxious and still deal with the situation.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œIโ€™m strong enough to handle whatโ€™s happening to me right now.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œThis is an opportunity for me to learn how to cope with my fears.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œI can ride this out and not let it get to me.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œI can take all the time I need right now to let go and relax.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œIโ€™ve survived other situations like this before, and Iโ€™ll survive this one too.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œMy anxiety/fear/sadness wonโ€™t kill me; it just doesnโ€™t feel good right now.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œThese are just my feelings, and eventually theyโ€™ll go away.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œItโ€™s okay to feel sad/anxious/afraid sometimes.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œMy thoughts donโ€™t control my life, I do.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œI can think different thoughts if I want to.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œIโ€™m not in danger right now.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œSo what?โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œThis situation sucks, but itโ€™s only temporary.โ€

๐Ÿ’Ž โ€œIโ€™m strong and I can deal with this.โ€

These help tolerate distressing situations by giving strength + motivation to endure hard experiences.

You can begin using them immediately.

Write your 5 favourite coping thoughts on an index card or a sticky note and keep it with you in your wallet or purse.

Or put your coping thoughts in conspicuous places where you can see them every day, like on your refrigerator or mirror.

The more you see your coping thoughts, the more quickly they will become part of your automatic thought process.

Day 1389: In order to heal from psychological and emotional trauma, youโ€™ll need to resolve the unpleasant feelings and memories youโ€™ve long avoided, discharge pent-up โ€œfight-or-flightโ€ energy, learn to regulate strong emotions, and rebuild your ability to trust other people. Itโ€™s important to realize that itโ€™s OK to feel joy, to celebrate successes, and revel in the warmth of your family and friends even after a traumatic event. Itโ€™s all part of the road to recovery.
