In July 2024, DeafLink received a two-year award of $269,755.00 to expand services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing in the mental health area. Last week, Ayana Brown, Mental Health & Wellness Bureau Chief, from the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, visited The League to learn more about what we do and discuss the impact of the initial grant.

With the support from the Indiana Family & Social Service Administration Grant, Deaflink was able to provide training to mental health staff on Deaf culture and extend interpretive services to people who were deaf or hard of hearing.

They were able to expand training of the DeafLink staff to include certifications in mental health interpreting and create educational training opportunities with
emergency services such as police, fire & safety, and EMS that deal directly with the deaf or hard of hearing community. This grant has been transformative to our community, and we hope to build other partnerships like this in the near future. For more about Deaflink and The League, visit us at www.the-league.org.

The League participated in the United Way of Allen County "Day of Caring." We were paired with Elevatus Architecture this year. They knocked out the project list in no time. Which meant we got to spend some time with them at lunch, learning about what they do at Elevatus, and sharing with them what we do.

We were excited to hear that Asphalt Authority will be scheduling a time to re-line our parking spaces. We are thankful for the Elevatus Team and Asphalt Authority for your help.

Empowering, Advocating, and Acheiving Independance

In 1949, the Allen County Committee for the Blind brought Helen Keller to Fort Wayne in order to challenge the community to address the needs of people who are blind. The result was the development of The Allen County League for the Blind. In 1981, the agency became the first Center for Independent Living in Indiana. In 1990, eligibility for services was opened to all people with severe disabilities. In 1994, the organization’s name was changed to The League for the Blind & Disabled, Inc. to better reflect the Center’s service to all people with disabilities in Allen and surrounding counties. In 2006, the agency acquired DeafLink to provide sign language interpreting services and case coordination, and in 2009, the In-Home Care Division was created. In 2016, the agency incorporated Home Health Care in order to provide skilled medical care. Today, The League continues its tradition as a direct service provider and advocate for people with disabilities in 11 counties in Northeast Indiana.
