Thanksgiving fun facts:
1. No pumpkin pie was served at the first Thanksgiving.
2. The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924 featured zoo animals.
3. Only male turkeys, called toms, can gobble.
4. "Jingle Bells" was originally written as a Thanksgiving song in 1857.

Thanksgiving Joke:
Q: "Why did the turkey want to join the band?
A: "He already had the drumsticks."

For the last few weeks, the staff at the League has been collecting shelf-stable, non-perishable items to stock some of the community pantries near our location on South Anthony. With a packed car, the staffers headed out and were able to restock pantries located at Faith United Methodist Church on Fairfield, Bahn Mi Pho Shop on Fairfield, and Southside High School on Calhoun.

These pantries are overseen by Forward Indiana. Forward Indiana is a grassroots community action group that facilitates mutual aid through multiple avenues, including food pantries and gardens. For more information on how you can assist, visit their page at https://www.facebook.com/forwardindiana or contact them directly at Forwardindiana@hotmail.com. The page lists all the pantries in Fort Wayne and the surrounding communities.

This was a great opportunity for our staff to come together and support our community. This holiday season, consider gathering some friends or family and stocking a pantry near you. A list of needed or suggested items is listed on the Forward Indiana page.

This week, students from the Huntington University OTA program toured the League. Students met with several team members from our Independent Living division, where they learned about disability etiquette and human sight guide techniques for people who are blind or with low vision.

The students were able to see first-hand some of the adaptable equipment used by people with disabilities.

We are always excited to have these students join us and learn about our mission, programs, and services, as well as further their knowledge about proper etiquette when working with a person with a disability. For more information on the Huntington University OTA program, visit their website at https://www.huntington.edu/occupational-therapy-assistant.

Empowering, Advocating, and Acheiving Independance

In 1949, the Allen County Committee for the Blind brought Helen Keller to Fort Wayne in order to challenge the community to address the needs of people who are blind. The result was the development of The Allen County League for the Blind. In 1981, the agency became the first Center for Independent Living in Indiana. In 1990, eligibility for services was opened to all people with severe disabilities. In 1994, the organization’s name was changed to The League for the Blind & Disabled, Inc. to better reflect the Center’s service to all people with disabilities in Allen and surrounding counties. In 2006, the agency acquired DeafLink to provide sign language interpreting services and case coordination, and in 2009, the In-Home Care Division was created. In 2016, the agency incorporated Home Health Care in order to provide skilled medical care. Today, The League continues its tradition as a direct service provider and advocate for people with disabilities in 11 counties in Northeast Indiana.
