💜🏡 Making a Loved One with Dementia Feel Valued at Home 🏡💜

A dementia diagnosis may change how a person remembers — but it doesn’t change their need to feel loved, respected, and valued. In fact, small, everyday actions can make a big difference in helping your loved one feel included, dignified, and connected.

Here are a few simple ways to support their emotional well-being at home:

🧠 Focus on their strengths — Give them tasks they can still do, like folding laundry or watering plants
💬 Include them in conversations — Even if they don’t follow everything, they still enjoy being part of the moment
🎶 Use music and memories — Familiar songs or photo albums can bring comfort and spark joy
👂 Listen with patience — Even if words are hard, emotions are still very real
🖐️ Show affection and respect — A gentle touch or kind word goes a long way

At Home Instead, we believe every senior deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued. Our caregivers are trained in dementia care and know how to create comforting routines, meaningful moments, and safe spaces that promote dignity and connection.

Because it’s not just about caring for someone — it’s about caring with heart. 💜

💬❤️ Helping Your Child Connect with a Loved One Living with Dementia ❤️💬

Talking to a loved one with dementia can be challenging — especially for children who may not understand why Grandma or Grandpa sometimes forgets or acts differently.

Here are a few tips to help your child communicate with kindness and patience:
🌟 Use simple, clear language and speak slowly
🌟 Encourage your child to be patient — it’s okay if the conversation feels one-sided sometimes
🌟 Focus on feelings and memories rather than facts (“I love spending time with you” vs. “Do you remember my birthday?”)
🌟 Use pictures, music, or favorite stories to spark connection
🌟 Teach your child to listen with their heart, not just their ears

At Home Instead, we understand how important family connections are — and we’re here to help. Our trained caregivers provide compassionate support for your loved one with dementia, so your family can have more meaningful, stress-free moments together.

Whether it’s guidance on communication, help with daily care, or just someone to share a laugh with, we’re by your side every step of the way. 💜

If you need support navigating dementia care or want tips on talking with your loved one, reach out to your local Home Instead office today.

🦷✨ Taking Care of Senior Smiles: Why Dental Health Matters ✨🦷

Good dental care isn’t just about a bright smile — it’s essential for overall health, especially for seniors. Poor oral hygiene can lead to issues like gum disease, tooth loss, infections, and even impact heart health and diabetes management.

As we age, maintaining dental health can become more challenging due to mobility limitations, medication side effects, or cognitive changes.

That’s where Home Instead can help! 💜

Our compassionate caregivers assist with:
✅ Gentle reminders and assistance with daily brushing and flossing
✅ Helping seniors get to dental appointments safely and on time
✅ Monitoring oral health and alerting families or healthcare providers if issues arise
✅ Encouraging good nutrition that supports dental health

We believe that caring for our seniors means caring for their whole health — including their smiles! If you or a loved one need support with dental care or other daily activities, we’re here to help.

This is why we walk. 💜

When Michelle’s dad, Don, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 69, her family’s world changed forever. Over 10 years, she watched him go from living at home with caregivers to assisted living, and eventually to an Alzheimer’s unit before he passed away at age 79.

Earlier this year, dementia touched her family again when Michelle’s mom, Sandy, had a stroke and heart attack that rapidly advanced her dementia. Now in memory care, Michelle visits Sandy every evening. Despite these challenges, she finds gratitude: “Even though my mom has changed, I’m still creating memories with her.”

For Michelle, Walk to End Alzheimer’s is about honoring her parents and connecting with others. Each year, she joins her Home Instead team and others in the senior care community to walk not in sadness, but in hope for a cure.

It’s because of passionate people like Michelle that Home Instead, a Walk to End Alzheimer’s Gold National Team, has raised nearly $5.5 million over the past 17 years — including $280,000 just last year — to advance critical Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.

Together with the , we’re fighting for a future without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Let’s make 2025 our most impactful year yet. 💪

We walk for our clients. We walk for our families.💜
And this year, we walk with one goal: to help end Alzheimer’s.

At Home Instead, we’ve seen the impact of Alzheimer’s and other dementias firsthand in the homes we visit, in the people we love, and in the lives of those we serve every day. That’s why we’re proud to be a National Team in the 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Together, our network has raised nearly $5.5 million over the past 17 years—and more than $280,000 just last year. 🎉 Let’s make 2025 our biggest impact yet.

It’s hotter than a pepper sprout out there! 🥵

And while we’re all reaching for iced drinks and fans, older adults need a little extra care to stay safe in the summer heat.

Here’s your caregiver-approved summer safety toolkit for aging loved ones:

💧 Hydrate with variety – Water is essential, but try chilled fruit, herbal iced tea, smoothies, or even popsicles to keep it fun and refreshing.

👒 Dress smart – Light, breathable clothing and wide-brimmed hats help regulate temperature and protect sensitive skin.

🌬️ Cool it down – If there’s no AC, use fans, cold washcloths, or even a bowl of cool water for hands and wrists to provide quick relief.

🌿 Time outdoor activities wisely – Early mornings or evenings are safest. A short stroll, porch chat, or birdwatching can bring joy without overheating.

👂 Connect with care – Sometimes, just being present — listening, sharing a memory, or sitting together — is the best form of comfort.

Let’s keep our older adults safe, seen, and supported this summer.

🔁 Share this post to spread the word about senior summer safety.
