👁️ November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month
At Aboite Family Eyecare Center, we want to help our community understand the difference between Non-Proliferative and Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy—two stages of diabetic eye disease that can affect vision.
🔹 Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR)
• Early stage of the disease
• Often no symptoms
• Caused by weakened retinal blood vessels that leak fluid or blood
• Can lead to macular edema, which affects central vision
• Detectable during a dilated eye exam, even when vision seems normal
🔹 Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR)
• More advanced and serious stage
• The retina begins to grow new, fragile blood vessels
• These vessels can bleed, cause scar tissue, and lead to retinal detachment
• Without treatment, PDR can cause severe vision loss
✨ The good news: With early detection and proper diabetic management, much of this vision loss is preventable.
If you have diabetes, a yearly dilated eye exam is essential.
