Yellow Key Collaborative I work with individuals and couples to explore their current challenges and stuck places in a safe and nonjudgemental space.

Together we experiment with new ways to bring about new understandings, connection and healing.

Yesterday, I rushed to get the new letter board up before my next client arrived.

This is what that client saw. 😂😂

It’s really sort of perfect in its own way. I later realized my mistake and fixed it to read “Perfectionism is a way to hide.”

Perfectionism gives you a way out of discomfort. You don’t have to try because it won’t meet your expectations. You don’t have to fall short. You don’t make that embarrassing mistake because nothing is there.

And you often don’t move forward. Instead of perfectionism and high expectations, try making a small mistake on purpose to try it out. Take a tiny step. Experiment with compassionate responses to yourself.

Perfectionism is habitual. It takes time to adopt new responses. So keep showing up and see what happens.

This is Max. I wasn’t the only one taking his picture. Love the Monon! Max is proof that it’s almost always a good idea to get outside. ☀️

Do you have an unusual Pick Me Up strategy? Often when working with clients, we’ll put together a list of strategies to use to help ride the waves of difficult emotions or situations. We discuss them and practice them in session.
Even without a therapy session or any other research, I bet that you already use your own unique strategies to cope with stress and difficult emotions or situations.

Maybe you paint a room a new color when you’re feeling down and stuck. Maybe you tend to get yourself outside in some way. Maybe you bake cookies or go to the library and browse the new books shelves. Maybe you reorganize your pantry.
Mine is buying a new plant. When I’m in a rut, a new plant very often will do the trick. If I really want to amp up the good vibes, I’ll get a bag of soil and a new pot and transplant a smaller plant into fresh soil in a bigger container with lots of room to spread out and grow.
Clearly, this isn’t a metaphor that needs explaining, nor was it intentional on my end. It wasn’t until I started to pay closer attention did I realize how helpful this strategy was for me.
Right now, you may feel guilty about some of the less helpful strategies that you use when you’re not feeling your best. What if you started noticing the smaller, more helpful ones you’ve been using all along? I’m willing to bet they’re there, just waiting to be noticed.
If not, feel free to borrow the plant idea and buy a new little foliage friend when the mood strikes.

We finished our first Collage Care Course last week. 🙌🏻

We focused on the creative process versus the outcome.

We talked about tuning in and noticing that “something” that speaks to you.

It was an amazing 4 weeks. I can’t wait to offer it again in January of 2024. ✂️🎨

I’ll share more about the this course, including what participants had to say about it in the October newsletter. Head over to the website to subscribe if don’t already receive it.

Creative endeavors support our mental health in so many ways. Yet, so many people tell me that as adults it feels “silly, embarrassing or frivolous” to engage in creative play. It’s worth rethinking our relationship to creativity.

I recently read this statement I’m a book about creativity and perfectionism. It stopped me in my tracks.

Which then prompted some curiosity.

I wonder, does statement feel liberating to you? Or does it feel more like “Um, duh.”

You don’t need to be pleasing here.

Are there spaces and people for you where that feels true?
