Your “due date” isn’t a deadline, it’s a window of time when you can expect to have your baby.
If you’re pregnant or planning to be, this is crucial information that could help you avoid an unnecessary cesarean section.
Your due date represents 40 weeks, and that’s just the statistical midpoint of a healthy full-term pregnancy, which ranges from 38 to 42 weeks. All of those weeks are considered normal and safe for delivery.
When we treat the due date as a hard deadline, it creates pressure to intervene with induction simply because you’ve reached 40 weeks. And intervening too early significantly increases your chances of ending up with a C-section.
Unless there’s a medical reason to induce, being “past your due date” at 40 weeks and a few days is completely normal.
Don’t fall for the due date mythology. Your baby will come when they’re ready—anywhere in that 38-42 week window.
