👋 Meet Us Monday: Dr. Austin Hartzog, Pharm.D., RPh

Before he was counseling patients and overseeing the Pharmacy, Austin Hartzog was out in the Costco parking lot pushing carts, doing everything he could to get his foot in the door. Determined to work in the pharmacy, he took on roles in merchandising, stocking, and inventory until a spot finally opened up while he was in college — and he never looked back.

Austin officially joined the Fort Wayne Custom Rx team in 2019, bringing with him almost a decade of pharmacy experience and a deep passion for patient care. He started his pharmacy journey as a technician-in-training, worked his way up to certified pharmacy technician, and ultimately earned his Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from Manchester University in 2020.

During pharmacy school, Austin balanced intern roles at both Costco and Fort Wayne Custom Rx, and even held a unique morning merchant position where he focused on supplement marketing and stocking before the warehouse opened.

He is now a licensed pharmacist in both Indiana and Michigan, Certified in Compounded Sterile Preparations through the LP3 Network, and trained extensively in hazardous and non-hazardous non-sterile compounding. His experience across all levels of pharmacy makes him a valuable team leader who can work, train, and oversee every role in the lab.

When he’s not compounding or consulting, Austin enjoys life in Fort Wayne with his wife, three kids, and their dog — often spending weekends exploring the outdoors.

Let’s talk about a fascinating little compound—oxytocin. You might’ve heard it called the “love hormone,” and for good reason.

Oxytocin is a naturally occurring hormone in the body that plays a key role in bonding, trust, social connection, and even mood regulation. It’s released during meaningful moments like hugging, childbirth, breastfeeding, and emotional connection. That’s how it earned its affectionate nickname.

What many people don’t realize is that oxytocin can also be compounded into a nasal spray, which makes it easier for the body to absorb and use effectively. Some providers are exploring compounded oxytocin as part of therapy plans involving social anxiety, PTSD, emotional dysregulation, chronic stress, or even relationship support.

Like all compounded medications, oxytocin nasal spray requires a prescription, and your provider will need to determine if it’s the right fit for you.
