We call them "Future Templates" in EMDR. Where we visualize the best outcome to an upcoming event that might normally be stressful, triggering or anxiety provoking. We focus on reducing distress while instilling confidence and calm as we work with this visualization. Of course we cannot guarantee the outcome, but in reinforcing and practicing this upcoming event with new skills and a regulated system it gives you a different way to respond; a new template 😊

*Trigger Warning

One mother shares about her traumatic birth experience – “When I share the story about my son's birth I worry that people will think I am selfish or ungrateful…I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy, which is what everyone wants, but the process to get there was difficult and the labor and delivery was one medical intervention after the next.”

Sh*t happens in life and in therapy we try to make shifts happen. We focus on small shifts...small steps, small growth and before you know it all those little shifts amount to a whole lot of shift...expansion, resources, hope and healing. So when sh*t happens, know you have a therapist that will work with you to make shifts happen 😊

The holidays are among us and whether you need to regulate your nervous system around family, shopping or the craze of the season here are a few ways to “down regulate” and increase the calm. 3 simple and easy tools to add to your toolkit:

1. Mammalian dive: dunking your face into ice cold water or splashing cold water onto your face, especially underneath the eyes.
2. Voo sound: after inhaling, slowly release the breath by making a deep fog horn sound with the word “voo” for 3 seconds or longer allowing the sound to vibrate and resonate in your chest, arms, and even legs (https://fb.watch/w6-YPkOUpu/)
3. Ear massage: the ears are heavily innervated by the vagus nerve. A gentle ear massage for a few minutes can help to tap into the calm. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPM7eZiw7ZE&t=335s)

Practicing these simple techniques can make a world of difference. Try incorporating them in your morning routine or use them as needed.
