Quiz Time from your neighborhood friendly gynecologist!

If you guessed all of them, you are correct!

Syphilis has quite a storied history! Here are a few fascinating facts about it:

Syphilis is believed to have originated in the Americas and was brought back to Europe by Christopher Columbus' crew members in the late 15th century.

It's often called "The Great Imitator" because its symptoms can mimic many other diseases, leading to misdiagnosis.

Several historical figures are believed to have suffered from syphilis, including Henry VIII, Al Capone, and Napoleon Bonaparte.

While syphilis was on the decline for much of the 20th century, it has been making a comeback in recent years, particularly among certain demographics and regions.

Regular testing and prompt treatment are crucial for preventing complications.

Maternal mortality in the United States remains a pressing concern, despite being one of the wealthiest nations. The rate of maternal deaths, particularly among Black and Indigenous women, is disproportionately high compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Factors such as inadequate access to prenatal care, systemic racism in healthcare, and socioeconomic disparities contribute to this alarming trend. Addressing maternal mortality requires comprehensive efforts to improve healthcare access, quality, and equity for all expectant mothers, regardless of race or socioeconomic status.

On Saturday April 13th, we walked to raise awareness and support mom, babies and families affected by this crisis. So amazing to see our community come out and support this wonderful cause!

Untreated gonorrhea can lead to severe complications. In women, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can result in chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. In men, it can lead to epididymitis, a painful condition affecting the tubes attached to the testicles. Both genders can experience disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI), where the bacteria spread to other parts of the body, causing arthritis, skin lesions, and even life-threatening conditions like meningitis. Additionally, untreated gonorrhea increases the risk of contracting and transmitting other s*xually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Complications during pregnancy, such as premature birth or passing the infection to the newborn also can occur. Regular testing and prompt treatment are crucial for preventing these complications.

Quiz Time from your neighborhood friendly gynecologist!

If you guessed A, you are correct!

This nickname is said to be a shortened form of the French term for brothel (‘clapier’). Other theories are that it describes a primitive treatment that involved clapping the p***s between your hands to squeeze out the pus that is common with gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is a gram-negative diplococcus, meaning it appears as pairs of cells under a microscope. The bacterium primarily infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract, but it can also affect the throat, re**um, and eyes through s*xual contact. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is highly contagious and can be transmitted through vaginal, a**l, or oral s*x. Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern with gonorrhea, making it increasingly challenging to treat. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent the spread of the infection and its complications.

Quiz Time from your neighborhood friendly gynecologist!

If you chose C—no symptoms, you are correct!!

It is important to note that many STIs can be asymptomatic, meaning they show no symptoms at all.

STI symptoms can vary depending on the type of infection, but common signs include unusual ge***al discharge, pain or burning during urination, ge***al itching, sores or bumps on the ge***al area, pain during s*xual in*******se, and abnormal bleeding. Regular STI testing, especially after engaging in unprotected s*xual activity or with a new partner, is crucial for early detection and treatment.

In the past five years, the rate of s*xually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States has shown a concerning trend. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019, there were approximately 2.5 million reported cases of chlamydia, making it the most commonly reported bacterial STI. Gonorrhea and syphilis cases also increased, with over 600,000 cases of gonorrhea and nearly 130,000 cases of syphilis reported in the same year. Furthermore, there has been a concerning increase in conge***al syphilis cases, with a nearly 40% rise from 2018 to 2019 alone.

Despite advancements in awareness and prevention efforts, STI rates have continued to rise. Factors contributing to this increase include insufficient access to healthcare, stigma surrounding STIs, inconsistent condom use, and the emergence of drug-resistant strains. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive public health strategies focused on education, access to testing and treatment, and destigmatizing conversations about s*xual health.

The team walked today to help raise awareness and celebrate the current fighters and survivors of colon cancer.

Women often underestimate their risk of colon cancer, believing it primarily affects men.

It is the 3rd most common cancer in both genders.

Debunking the myth that it only affects older individuals, younger women should also be vigilant about symptoms and screening options to catch it early and increase chances of successful treatment.

68% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented with screening.

All adults 45 and older should be screened.

Come see Empower Gynecology to discuss your risk and screening for colorectal cancer.
