Spotlight on Dr. Charles J. Deur.

Charles Jay Deur, M.D. is a Renaissance man.

He was the first oncologist in Arlington, Texas, starting his private practice in 1980 and eventually joining Texas Oncology in 1994 until his retirement in 2019.

In 2003 the Arlington Medical Society named Dr. Deur “Physician of the Year.” He loved his patients and is beloved by them.

For 45 years, Charles taught Sunday school and led a men’s Bible study. He was involved with two church plantings in DFW. His philosophy is: “Know what you believe. Study God’s Word so you can give an account of your faith and the source of your hope.”

Charles taught himself to read Greek and translated Homer’s “Odyssey” by hand into English. He always carried the Greek Septuagint to church.

He loves history and spent many years touring Civil War battlefields, Roman ruins, presidential libraries, and historical museums. Charles documented all his travels in journals and watercolor sketchbooks.

He is an avid collector of revenue stamps, ancient coins, and pressed pennies. Charles is also a voracious reader. He never attended a concert, movie, or sporting event without a paperback by Jane Austen, Anthony Trollope, or Patrick O’Brian.

Charles loves Baroque music and the pop music duo “Air Supply.”

He is fortunate to have had two happy marriages. With his late wife Debra, he had two children: George and Juliana. He married Melissa in 2005 and has a stepson, Trey.

Charles has six grandchildren who have all visited him regularly at James L. West in the past two years.

This recognition celebrates organizations and individuals who are making a difference across the healthcare landscape. For us, it highlights the dedication of our staff, caregivers, volunteers, and supporters who work every day to provide compassionate dementia care, education, and advocacy in our community. 💜

Our CEO, Cheryl, proudly accepted this recognition on behalf of the entire James L. West team during the Advocates in Health Care Awards Dinner last night.

We are grateful to the Fort Worth Business Press for this incredible honor and to our community for trusting us to walk alongside families on the dementia journey.
