Rare Infections and Infant Formula
There have been reports of 3 cases of a very rare infection, including one death, in infants in Missouri and Oklahoma. An investigation is under way to determine the source of the bacteria that caused the infections. Two of the infants were on the same infant formula—Mead Johnson Enfamil Newborn—the third infant was on a different formula. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Mead Johnson are investigating to see if there could be any link between the formula and these bacteria—Mead Johnson has reportedly tested the batch of Enfamil formula and found NO EVIDENCE of any bacterial contamination. The FDA’s investigation is ongoing and they have issued no statements. Some retailers have pulled the Enfamil formula from their shelves as a precaution, but there has been no directive to do this from the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) or FDA, and no evidence that the formula is unsafe or related to these infections. We will continue to monitor this news, but at this time there have been only three cases in the entire country and none in Texas.
