Planting and pruning at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth is underway for an eco-friendly reveal. Thanks to innovative ideas from nursing leadership, the hospital’s employees and visitors will soon enjoy a butterfly garden on campus. Located along West Terrell Avenue between the Emergency Department and Klabzuba tower, the new butterfly garden is full of flowers that attract butterflies, such as bergamot, blazing stars and milkweed.

“Along with improving the community, we became interested in the intersection between climate and environment on health outcomes for humans,” said Shirley Martin, Ph.D., R.N., CPN. “We recognized that time in nature is healing for patients and their caregivers in and out of the hospital.”

“Gardening represents both an encounter with nature and a form of exercise,” Martin said. Physical exercise through gardening can also help with reducing blood pressure and relieving muscle tension, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who have worked to build this beautiful space.

A bowel obstruction at birth nearly set baby Charlotte on an uncertain path—but her family found hope, healing, and a second home in the NICU at Texas Health Fort Worth.

Born at 34 weeks, Charlotte underwent emergency surgery just one day after birth to repair a severe bowel blockage. She struggled to gain weight in the early days, but the NICU team was always one step ahead, providing care, constant support, and compassion that made all the difference.

“Charlotte’s nurses made each day easier with their kindness, positivity, and love,” her family shared. “When we couldn’t be there, they celebrated her milestones, helped us document her journey with photos, and gave us peace of mind knowing she was safe, cozy, and happy.”

After 36 days, Charlotte’s biggest milestone came—discharge day.

“The NICU means so much to us. It’s where babies are saved, cared for, treated like family, and celebrated. We’ll never forget the people who helped write Charlotte’s story.”

This NICU Awareness Month, we recognize the tiniest fighters, the families who love them endlessly, and the caregivers whose compassion turns the unthinkable into the unforgettable.
