Happy Postdoc Appreciation Week!!! We have a dilemma… our new Postdoc does not want to be posted on social media 😩. She agreed that I could post her pic this time but without her name. I went a step further to protect her identity until she is ready and added the emoji. She is an up and coming star so I want to show her off!! Looking forward to your success, Dr. A! ♥️

She started in the lab this week on … can’t wait to celebrate her big next year! 🎉

Congratulations to our high school summer student, Jada Akinseye, on an extraordinary poster presentation during the UTSW STARS Program Research Day last Friday. Jada worked so hard and was a pleasure. We are so proud!

May 10 is World Lupus Day! 💜🦋

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack healthy tissues, leading to inflammation and damage to organs like the kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, and skin. It affects more than 5 million people worldwide and disproportionately impacts women and people of color. In fact, 9 out of 10 people with lupus are women, and Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American populations are more likely to develop more severe forms of the disease. 🦋

This is why our work matters.
In the Mathis Laboratory, we are driven by a mission to understand the root causes of lupus and reduce the burden of this disease on vulnerable communities. Our research focuses on how lupus affects the kidneys, blood pressure, and immune system—and how innovative treatments can calm inflammation and protect organ function. We’re proud to be supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and others who believe in the power of science to change lives. 💪🏾

But beyond the science, we are a team of dynamic women committed to pushing the boundaries of discovery and mentoring the next generation of scientists. The MatLab isn’t just a place of research—it’s a space for brilliance, resilience, and representation. 💜

On World Lupus Day, we honor the warriors living with lupus, and we commit to doing the work that brings us closer to a cure. 🦋

This is me with Dr. Deidra C. Crews, MD. She is the first Black American President of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). In 2024, she led ~21,000 physicians and scientists from around the world in their quest to prevent, treat, and cure kidney diseases. The cool thing is she is a mom, wife, and daughter, and just as she loves her career, she loves her family. She is so down to earth, yet she stands on business. What an example! I’m so proud of her. 🥰

In 2024, Dr. Mathis attended her first Kidney Week! She organized two sessions as she served on the education planning committee, and she networked with leaders of the American Society of Nephrology while in sunny San Diego.

Can’t wait for Kidney Week 2025 in Houston! We have already started planning and the program promises to be as stimulating as ever!

As we settle into our new surroundings, we’ve been impressed by how deeply our institution values diversity. In 2024, we attended as many diversity celebrations as possible, and left all of them so happy that we did. We’ve had the privilege of hearing the president of an HBCU, Dr. Michael Sorrell of Paul Quinn College, share his fascinating career journey and insights. We also listened to civil rights icon, Opal Lee, recount her powerful experiences and share her inspiring plans for the future. Additionally, we’ve explored Pan-Asian medicine, gaining valuable knowledge about how we treat patients from those regions. We’ve also learned about Native American health care and the rich, often overlooked history of their medical treatment.

Each of these extraordinary presentations was enriched by cultural performances, including music and other artistic expressions, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We truly appreciate how our institution brings such diverse perspectives to the forefront, and we hope they continue to foster these enriching experiences in 2025 and beyond. It’s a testament to their genuine commitment to diversity.
