💕 Happy Valentine’s Day from Trinity Terrace! Love is in the air, and today we’re sharing another resident love story—one that began halfway around the world and unfolded in the most unexpected way.
Meet Joe and Loanne.
"Joe and I both grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, but independently of each other went to Germany—he studying medicine in Heidelberg and I studying psychology in Bonn.
We met at a very DIY student wedding in Heidelberg, where I spent the morning deep-frying 200 egg rolls and was told, by a horrified girl, that I smelled like one. After showering and returning with wet hair and a terrible hair day, I sat down determined not to be assigned another task—when Joe walked in and chose to sit with the antisocial, sour-looking girl.
He was exhausted from medical finals and made the mistake of criticizing my dissertation, yet somehow never left my table. We ate, danced and talked, but slowly I thought he talked too much and I left without saying goodbye. However, after several months Joe tracked me down and came to visit just before Christmas. We shared a meal which I cooked in my dorm room—later described as the worst curry he’d ever eaten. We said Merry Christmas and goodbye, but the next morning, at 7 a.m., he rang my doorbell after waiting for hours in his unheated car and offered to drive me to my friends in Mannheim. On second thought, he wasn’t that bad. We got married—and we still are, 55 years later.”
