The Optometric Technician assists the optometrist with general appointments to keep the office running smoothly and efficiently. This includes a variety of patient care tasks, including: preparation of patients to be seen by the physician, performance of diagnostic tests,appropriate documentation and scribing.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide exceptional patient care clinically and by creating a customer/patient service experience that is phenomenal for each and every patient.
Check patients in and out, verify insurance, update contact information at each visit, and assist with referrals.
Effectively handle telephone inquiries.
Acquiring medical history and chief complaint of patient, prepare patient chart, and ensure confidentiality of all records.
Perform preliminary and special testing for Optometrist.
Assist patients with selection and dispensing of frames and lenses.
Assist patients with contact lens education
Administrative duties for this position include faxing, copying, making phone calls, preparing patients' medical records, scanning, and entering extensive data in the office's computer system.
Handle patient calls and effectively manage schedule
Contact patients to confirm appointments.
Track and report daily scheduling metrics.
Maintain patient records in billing/scheduling system
Type correspondence for professionals.
Provide back-up billing support
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
Coordinate daily activities and handle or delegate special projects as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position is performed in an office environment and requires periods of sitting or standing that may last one hour or longer, and should require approximately 10% sitting, 70% standing, and 20% walking.
Physical requirements may include the need to occasionally lift up to twenty-five pounds.
Job pressures are high for meeting deadlines, working on multiple tasks at one time, and frequent interruptions.
Occupational requirements for this position include the ability to see, hear, and speak clearly and distinctly.
The mental ability required is high for reasoning, reading, remembering, writing, and speaking.
This position requires the ability to work extended or unusual hours to meet the occasional needs of the practice or in an emergency situation.

This position reports to Dr. West.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY
Skills required of the Optometry Technician include:
The ability to use and maintain a manual and automatic lensometer, autorefractor, phoropter, Goldman Tonometry, slit lamp, color vision plates, stereo vision test, OCT, Fundus Photography and personal computers.
Additional front office or office management experience is a plus.
Being extremely efficient, organized and resourceful, must also be flexible and able to function well in a fast-paced environment with great interpersonal skills to deal with many personalities.
Strong decision making skills.
Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients and other staff members.
Must be proficient in Excel and Microsoft Word.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Employee must have a high school diploma, some college preferred, completion of a basic optometry course, equivalent paraoptometric training, or paraoptometric certification with a minimum of 2 years working as a technician in an eye care practice.
