Not every negative thought will carry the same weight in your mind, and it's important to know when self-soothing is the best option or when you should seek help externally.
Intrusive thoughts and impulsive thoughts can often feel similar in the moment, but they come from very different places:
π Impulsive thoughts push you to act quickly, sometimes without thinking things through
π Acting on impulses can have negative consequences
π Intrusive thoughts are unwanted & often upsetting, stemming from your fears
π Acting on intrusive thoughts can lead to compulsive, sometimes dangerous behaviors in an attempt to self-soothe
Neither of these thoughts are pleasant, but they aren't the same.
And confusing the two can lead to unnecessary guilt, shame, or missed opportunities to get support.
