SUAKOKO, B**g County, Liberia — March 25, 2026 — A Liberian diaspora organization based in the United States, the Liberian Nurses Association of Dallas-Fort Worth (LNA-DFW), has dedicated a newly renovated OB/GYN ward at Phebe Referral Hospital in Suakoko District #5, B**g County.
Speaking during the dedicatory ceremony on Wednesday, LNA-DFW Board Chairman Thomas Woahloe said the organization partnered with the administration of Phebe Hospital to help ease the challenges pregnant women face while giving birth at the facility.
Woahloe said the renovation included combining the labor and delivery rooms into one ward.
He said work was carried out in key areas of the OB/GYN department, including tiling, ceiling repairs, replacement of damaged woodwork, reconnection of the sewage system, and painting, among other improvements.
He also revealed that, in addition to the renovation, the organization will provide various training programs aimed at improving quality healthcare and infection control at the hospital.
During the ceremony, the Liberian Nurses Association of Dallas-Fort Worth also donated medical supplies, including gloves, masks, gowns, three oxygen concentrators, a nebulizer machine, and three oxygen tanks.
Woahloe noted that the organization has provided similar assistance to Redemption Hospital in New Kru Town, Pipeline Community Clinic in Monrovia, and Ma Esther Clinic in Peace Island, including other health facilities across Liberia.
He said since its establishment in 2014, the association has been involved in providing medical supplies and support to health facilities across the country.
For their part, B**g County Health Team Administrator Sam Siakor, Phebe Hospital Board Chairman Sampson Tornola Varpilah, and Phebe Hospital Medical Director Dr. Minnie Sankawulo-Ricks lauded the Liberian Nurses Association of Dallas-Fort Worth for what they described as a timely and meaningful intervention.
They said the renovation of the OB/GYN ward will significantly improve maternal and newborn care at the hospital, which serves not only B**g County but several neighboring counties and countries at large.
According to them, the improvement in the labor and delivery facilities will help reduce overcrowding, and provide a safer and more comfortable environment for expectant mothers and health workers.
They further assured the leadership of the Liberian Nurses Association that the newly dedicated OB/GYN ward and the donated medical supplies will be used for their intended purpose.
The hospital administration said measures will be put in place to properly manage and maintain the facility and equipment to ensure longevity and continued service delivery.
They also called on other Liberian organizations in the diaspora and partners to follow the example of the Liberian Nurses Association of Dallas-Fort Worth by supporting the country’s health sector, especially in rural areas where medical facilities continue to face serious challenges, including limited equipment, inadequate infrastructure among others.
