Last, but certainly not least, our final intern Rhea Alexander. Rhea graduated from Fort Worth Country Day (Class of 2024) and is a member of the Class of 2028 at University of Texas at Austin. Let's get to know a little more about Rhea—

What are your plans after college?
I plan to attend some form of higher education after graduating UT. Medical school is definitely a very strong prospect.

Do you have plans for medical school? If yes, what is your dream medical school?
I am incredibly interested in medicine and am definitely strongly considering medical school, but need a little more time to solidify my plans. I would prefer to stay in Texas for medical school.

What do you hope to learn during this internship?
By the end of this internship, I hope to gain valuable real-world experience that will help me clarify my long-term career goals. I wanted to become an intern at Fort Worth Eye Associates because of the hands-on experience it offers and because it caters to my general interests in scientific studies. It is rare to come across an opportunity to gain direct exposure to the medical field that is not shadowing, and this program goes even further. It creates the opportunity to gain necessary real world experience at a high level without focusing on rudimentary, basic elements taught in a textbook. Additionally, working alongside experienced professionals allows me to observe firsthand the intricacies of patient care, medical procedures, and the day-to-day operations of a specialized medical practice as well as learn from their years of prior experience.

What is the best thing about the FWEA internship?
The best thing about the FWEA internship is the vast range of real-world experience that each intern receives. The program is incredibly immersive and never leaves you bored. Each intern is fully immersed in the field of optometry through working with patients in all of the different stages of their appointment: testing, working up, seeing the doctor, and possibly surgery. The different rotations allow for the interns to sharpen our skill set and receive comprehensive exposure in the field of optometry. In one week we can shift from taking fundus photos to watching cataract surgery in the OR and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to get this much experience at such a young age.

Favorite Book: Jane Eyre. Favorite Movie: Minari. Favorite TV Show: The Bear.

Favorite Fort Worth Location/ Attraction: Trinity Trail

Hobbies: Reading, hanging out with friends, watching TV shows

Today we'd like you to meet our next intern, Thakkar. Palak is a member of the Class of 2028 at University of Texas at Austin majoring in Finance and Pre-Med. Let's get to know Palak—

What are your plans after college?
After college, I plan to attend medical school and eventually pursue a career in both clinical care and healthcare leadership. My goal is to become a physician who not only treats patients but also contributes to the way care is delivered whether through private practice management, healthcare innovation, or community outreach. I’m especially interested in creating systems that make high-quality care more accessible and efficient, particularly for underserved populations. This internship has helped me see that it’s possible to combine medicine with meaningful operational impact which is exactly the kind of path I want to follow.

Do you have plans for medical school? If yes, what is your dream school?
Yes, definitely! While I’d be honored to attend any medical school (especially in Texas), my top choice is Baylor College of Medicine. Being located in the largest medical center in the country and deeply committed to serving underserved populations, Baylor’s mission resonates with me as someone from Austin who’s passionate about equitable access to healthcare and community-focused medicine.

What do you hope to learn during this internship?
I’m here to learn everything I possibly can: from patient care to the behind-the-scenes logistics of a specialty practice. I’ve especially enjoyed the chance to build technical skills, shadow in the OR, and am super excited to present a case study at NTREI. I hope to walk away from this summer with a deeper understanding of ophthalmology and the confidence to take on meaningful roles in patient care early in my medical journey.

What is the best thing about the FWEA internship experience?
The best part has been how eager everyone at FWEA and Community Eye Clinic Fort Worth is to teach us. That kind of mentorship and generosity in sharing knowledge is rare, and I’m incredibly grateful for it. Being able to practice hands-on skills and shadow all three doctors both in clinic and surgery has given me opportunities I didn’t expect to have until residency.

Favorite TV Show: One Day!

Favorite Fort Worth Location/Attraction:
La La Land Kind Café! I’m a huge caffeine enthusiast, and coming from the Austin suburbs where good coffee/matcha is hard to find, I’ve loved having La La so close to FWEA. I’m definitely taking advantage of it before heading back!

Hobbies:
I’ve been playing the flute since I was nine and it’s always been a creative outlet for me, whether I’m performing solo or with an ensemble. I also love baking in my free time and trying out new recipes! It’s my favorite way to decompress and make something sweet for the people I love.

Fort Worth Eye Associates is dedicated to the education and training of aspiring physicians. To that end, each summer we invite three interns to join us to teach them the art and science of practicing ophthalmologic care. Each intern splits their time between the Eye Clinic Fort Worth, shadowing at Health Surgery Center Park Hill, presenting a case at the Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI), and working at Fort Worth Eye Associates.

Meet one of our interns Jack Kelley, a rising senior at Weatherford High School. Go ’Roos!

During this internship, Jack is gaining in-depth knowledge about ophthalmology as a specialty. He says that his health classes have provided very little knowledge about the ocular region, and he looks forward to this internship expanding that knowledge.

Jack is still considering his options after high school: nursing school or medical school. He is looking at TCU for becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and University to Texas at Austin or University of North Texas for medical school.

According to Jack, the best things about this internship have been gaining hands-on experience by participating in patient workups alongside the very helpful and welcoming Fort Worth Eye Associates techs and interacting everyday with the Fort Worth Eye Associates doctors.

As a nation, we just celebrated Jack’s favorite holiday—Independence Day! Other favorites include the Bible (book), The Interview (movie), and “The Office” (TV show). Jack is definitely an active guy, and during his downtime he enjoys exercising, wakeboarding, pickleball, golf, and building Legos.

If you happen to be in the Fort Worth Eye Associates office this summer, don’t hesitate to say hi to Jack!

Congratulations to Evelyn, our incoming intern, who was accepted to medical school. She will be moving on to medical school while we welcome RHEA ALEXANDER as one of our three summer interns.

Rhea is another standout applicant, and we are excited to have her with us this summer. She is graduate of Fort Worth Country Day and is a rising sophomore at University of Texas at Austin majoring in Biology and Plan II.

Again, this is an incredible opportunity to combine clinical practice, surgery observation, community service, and research — and we’re honored to mentor the next generation of healthcare professionals

If you’re a patient in our clinic, don’t hesitate to say hi and welcome them!
