Today I’d like to honor a Mexican hero💚🤍❤️ I never met her, but have treasured the many stories. Her name is Celestina Rubalcaba and lived in the small town of Santa María de la Paz Zacatecas and she supported countless mamas in her area giving birth.
When I met my mother in law years ago, I shared that I’m a doula expecting her to not know what that is as most people don’t understand. After my explanation of what a doula is she smiled and responded, “That’s what my Mami did”. She went on and told me how she grew up with her mother leaving time to time to assist mothers in the village during their births. Since then I’ve heard more beautiful stories from my husband’s older Tia of all the mothers her own mother cared for and how lovingly she served them.
In the past, I used to use a rebozo without much thought, but now when I do I think of Celestina and how she possibly used the same fabric to lift and sift and hold the many mothers who needed a doula.
For centuries women have served women during birth. Doulas are nothing new, we only have a title once labor and birth became associated with the medical field. It is such a gift to be in the role of a doula and help tradition continue for mothers.
