Lent is a time of preparation for Easter. Often, we hear of what to give up during Lent or do something extra to serve and become closer to God. Postpartum is much like Lent.

Postpartum time is a chapter of ultimate self-sacrifice. I often call this time the 4th Trimester because you and your little one, even though out of utero, are STILL one unit. Our babies are born incredibly vulnerable and they often need to still be near or "attached" to you, not because they are clingy, but because you are their home still and they cling to you out of survival. Out of love.

So if you are in the postpartum time offer up what you are already doing to grow closer to our Lord. This time can be overwhelming and you are dying to yourself daily and giving up so much of yourself. Lean into prayer during challenging times and know that God is well pleased with you.

Pray
Pray while you are already nursing or feeding. Often babies feed about 12 times a day. Take this time to

Fast
from your phone filled with comparisons and worries and talk to our Lord. If it helps pray a rosary or meditate on the Stations of the Cross. The Church doesn't ask pregnant or recovering/nursing mothers too fast from food. Too many mamas are already not eating enough nutrients during this chapter.

and

Give
yourself grace and be patient with yourself. Mamas can put the weight of the world on their shoulders during the newborn phase. You are doing HOLY work and even though it can feel unseen. God sees, He sees all your sacrifices and He loves His you so much.

I'm praying for you beautiful Mama!

I just delivered my newborn and asked for all the medical staff to leave for my husband and I to name this little soul in my arms. I expected to have a short conversation of the list of names we had made. Instead he said, "I think his name is __________. After St. Jose Luiz Sanchez del Rio. Today's feast day."

I was bewildered since I had never heard of that name and it wasn't on the list. I asked for him to repeat it and figured out that we wouldn't be ready to name him. After two days, around 3 AM while I was nursing, I finally researched this 14 year old martyr. I was amazed at his courage and utter devotion to our Lord. It was clear, I was meant to name my son after this boy. Little did I know that St. Jose really choose me. He became one of my closest friends during that postpartum time.

I always loved naming animals at the zoo "he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each living creature was then its name." Genesis 2:19 But knew that naming my own child is an entirely next level of responsibility and such a gift. It took a couple of days for my husband and I to name our children because of the weight of naming a new little soul.

I love sharing about how we named our kiddos and I LOVE to hear other's stories. Whether the name was in the family, or it just came to them and God just kept poking them to choose. It is such a gift as a parent to name a child. A gift I always treasure. 💙

I don't know why I chose St. Brigid to be my confirmation saint, besides the fact that she was from Ireland. I'm very proud of my Irish ancestry. 🍀Most of her life is from folklore and legend, so very little is documented. But I was happily surprised to find that due to miracles that were associated with her stories, she is the Patron Saint of Midwifery and Babies.

For thousands of years women birthed their babies with the assistance of a midwife so it makes good sense that there would be a patron for these important women. Midwives are trained professionals skilled in normal birth. They walk with women through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum and many are able to offer well woman care as well. Midwives in the United States may attend birth at home, birth centers, or hospitals, depending on state.

The midwifery model of care emphasizes a personal approach that centers the mother rather than the provider or medical system. It views birth as a normal, healthy, and powerful event in a woman's life. Appointments are often 30 minutes to an hour long allowing the midwife to get to know the mother and her history, experiences, and desires for the birth. Midwives are trained to recognize when things might be varying from normal and may need more medical intervention. I have been honored to attend the many midwife assisted births. Midwives are an absolute gift to majority of mothers who have a low-risk pregnancy and birth.

May Saint Brigid intercede for those caring for us during birth and for these precious babies that are given to us.

Mothers everywhere need a nap! Not just in postpartum, but in all stages of motherhood. We could certainly use some rest, especially during this season.

Now, I know this is artwork scene is not in the Bible, but I believe that St. Joseph was an incredibly virtuous man who recognized the beauty, the sanctity, and also the exhaustion (lol) Mary possessed on our Lord's birthday. She certainly needed rest.

I pray for all the mothers tonight who are sacrificing and giving their children all that they can offer. Merry Christmas! May you find some sleep in Heavenly peace.💝

My clients often want silence, or nature sounds like oceans waves. But some choose curated music to help support them in labor. These playlists have ranged from rap music to Gregorian chant, love ballads to rhythm dance songs. Music is truly a gift from God that can give us the peace or energy we need when bringing life into the world.

I remember one woman was actually singing while in labor. It was absolutely precious to have her sing along the lullaby songs she chose for her daughter.

"The music of my soul is the hymn of the Lord, a melody of love cannot be silenced." -St. Cecilia

Today I’d like to honor a Mexican hero💚🤍❤️ I never met her, but have treasured the many stories. Her name is Celestina Rubalcaba and lived in the small town of Santa María de la Paz Zacatecas and she supported countless mamas in her area giving birth.

When I met my mother in law years ago, I shared that I’m a doula expecting her to not know what that is as most people don’t understand. After my explanation of what a doula is she smiled and responded, “That’s what my Mami did”. She went on and told me how she grew up with her mother leaving time to time to assist mothers in the village during their births. Since then I’ve heard more beautiful stories from my husband’s older Tia of all the mothers her own mother cared for and how lovingly she served them.

In the past, I used to use a rebozo without much thought, but now when I do I think of Celestina and how she possibly used the same fabric to lift and sift and hold the many mothers who needed a doula.

For centuries women have served women during birth. Doulas are nothing new, we only have a title once labor and birth became associated with the medical field. It is such a gift to be in the role of a doula and help tradition continue for mothers.

Abundantly blessed!!! I love when I get to attend a baptism from a recent birth, but this was special 💙

I’ve had the honor of having repeat clients in the last 16 years as a doula, but never 4 TIMES!!! It is a complete honor to have witnessed each one of these kiddos births. 🥹 Such a precious gift to help out their incredible mother. Sometimes I can’t believe how abundantly blessed I am!!!!💙❤️💛

Birth Affirmations may be... "My body knows how to birth my baby." But affirming your God given strength by quoting the Saints during birth is a powerful way to hold birth as a holy and sanctifying event. I'm not talking about dumb inspirational poster quotes, but quotes that can transform your perspective because they are soaked in the Holy Spirit.

For me it was a quote from St. Joan of Arc. Although she was a French (Rebel With a Cause) teenager in the 1400's her powerful testament to follow God's will assisted me throughout much of my pregnancy and labor. There are so many incredible saints in heaven whose lives on earth can assist you in challenging times and whose prayers in heaven are effective. Invite them with you during your journey of pregnancy, labor, birth, and motherhood. They are our friends and want to support us.
