I think a lot of people don't understand that, despite the name, MOST obstetric violence doesn't involve physical force. It can also be threaded through law and policy, and manifest through improper communication or lack of communication.

Like:

- patients are not given the option to refuse membrane sweeps, cervical checks, waters being broken--they're told very nicely that this is what is going to happen and most people don't even know to question that

- state regulations "require" patients to submit to prenatal va**nal exams if they want to have a home birth

- hospital policy restricts doulas from being present with their clients

- mandatory surgery policies aka VBAC (va**nal birth after cesarean) bans

- a patient is given a deadline for birth (before X weeks) or for labor (in under X hours) with the consequence being an invasive medical intervention

- any version of "you want to keep your baby safe, don't you" or "you don't want to hurt your baby, do you" as a justification for a medical invention or substitute for informed consent discussion

- the justice system has no mechanism to value the impact of rights violations and trauma on victims so no such lawsuit is ever viable

This is by no means an exhaustive list.

I would argue that obstetric violence is structural where midwifery is marginalized and oppressed, and overseen by hostile parties who often have a vested interest in suppressing midwifery access.

What a sweet milk drunk baby! โคโคโค

Breastfeeding does not always come easy for New Moms today, especially in the beginning, they do not have experience, preparation and education about what to expect and how to deal with issues that may arise, or they lack support, either within their tribe of family and friends or professionally if needed - especially if they don't have excellent midwifery care or a Lactation Consultant for the more challenging problems.

What helped you and your baby get the breastfeeding going well?

What was your biggest breastfeeding challenge and how did you overcome it?

โŒ›EVERYTHING HAS ITS PURPOSEโณ

I'm often asked in classes how the fluid gets out of the baby's lungs:
๐Ÿ”†
Amniotic fluid and mucous drains out of babyโ€™s chest and mouth while babyโ€™s chest is being squeezed by motherโ€™s va**na.
๐Ÿ”†
Usually there is a gap of a few minutes between birth of babyโ€™s head and the rest of the baby. This is why "slow and steady wins the race."
๐Ÿ”†
Slow, mother-led pushing, and allowing the fetal head to sit in the perineum with slow stretching decreases perineal trauma as well as gives the baby adequate time to benefit from chest compression in the va**nal canal to remove amniotic fluid from lungs.

Routine episiotomies are most certainly not healthier for mother or baby and is not recommended unless medically indicated.

๐ŸŒฟ Nuchal Cord ๐ŸŒฟ
This image is absolutely outstanding!
I know what you are thinking though, that cord around the neck...

A high percentage of babies are born with the cord wrapped around their neck, known as a nuchal cord, perhaps as much as 1 in 3. Many people assume that this has a detrimental effect to the baby, but this isn't generally thecase.

You see, a baby doesn't breathe like we do, whilst in the womb. They don't rely on air entry through their mouth and into their lungs. All of their oxygen and blood supply comes via the cord. Therefore, if the cord is wrapped around the neck, it doesn't effect gas exchange. The baby cannot really be strangled by the cord.

Yes, if the cord is tight around the neck, it can be squeezed during a contractions/surge and this can momentarily occlude oxygen and blood from passing to the baby, but in general this effect is no different than if the cord wasn't around the neck.

A potential, rare issue it could create is if the cord is very short and also wrapped around your baby, this could prevent them from being able to move down the birth canal effectively. Sort of like dangling something on a rope, that you just can't reach!

Babies are birthed through the cord or it can be slipped over the head once the head is born. Rarely, if the cord was very tight and the baby was unable to be born through it, it may need to be cut before the body is born.

Our bodies were made for this and the cord is super clever in the way it provides for your baby.

First of all, theyโ€™ve always asked for it. Either by crying, rooting, etc. Asking for needs to be met is never a bad sign. There is no โ€œtoo old.โ€

Sometimes birth looks like this.... One baby after the next.

Mom deeply meditating, as she safely brings her babies earth side.

She rests in the comfort of her own home, holding the hand of her child, while being held by many.

This AMAZING momma is on IG .set.chaos You should definitely follow her. โœจ๐Ÿ’›
