I just saw this on the news. I don't think it's a coincidence that the October surprises like the 1989 earthquake or the 1991 Oakland fires , breast cancer awareness and domestic violence months all occur in October. Just after the equinox. I think the bipolar nature of the seasons has something to do with it.

When I graduated Dental school from UCSF, I didn't really appreciate being awarded the Willard Fleming Scholar "in recognition of outstanding humanitarianism and active concern for the welfare of others". I'm really proud of that now.

Our Story

My dad was a dentist who graduated from Northwestern Dental School in 1953. I used to work in his dental practice when I was 12 years old, all through high school. Although I started as an art major at the University of Illinois, I switched to Zoology-Pre-dental at UC Berkeley. I then graduated UCSF School of Dentistry. I’ve spent most of my career working at non-profits: Harvard University, nursing homes like On Lok Senior Health Services for the Frail Elderly, Indian Health Services, San Mateo County Dental Clinic and finally teaching for 12 years at both my alma mater UCSF and the University of Pacific Dental School. My interest has always been for the greater good, hence my awards were for public health. The Johnson and Johnson Award for Community and Preventive Dentistry and the Fleming Scholar Humanitarian Award for “active concern and the welfare of others”

My goal for my patients is to help them have the healthiest, strongest mouths so that the only times they need to see me [except for emergencies] are for their twice a year teeth cleanings and check-ups. Eliminate tooth decay and gum disease.

My priorities: 1. avoid pain and infection 2. build your strength and looks of teeth and bone in your mouth. I will look at your whole biotype and consider your lifestyle and personality for the best health possible. What works for one may not work for another. We need to use and look at “all the tools in the tool chest.”
