Congratulations to Trinity United Church of Christ Tiffin on an excellent historical write up!
Then and Now – We were contacted by members of the Trinity Church in Tiffin, Ohio asking if we’d be willing to post some historical information about their church. Of course, we said “yes”, so we’ll be sharing their history and photos over the next few days. The reason for this is that the Trinity United Church of Christ, located at 131 E. Perry Street in Tiffin, is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its creation this year. The history of Trinity U.C.C., however, goes back to the early days of Tiffin. Its name has changed several times, but its influence as a leader in Tiffin’s history has never wavered.
In 1833 First Reformed Church (known by some as the First German Reformed Church, or sometimes just as the German Reformed Church), purchased a lot from Josiah Hedges on the corner of Monroe St. and Madison Street for $250 (about $9,500 today). This is now the site of City Parking Lot 6, behind First Presbyterian Church. First Reformed Church began to slowly build a 40x60 foot brick church in 1836, and by 1847 the building was completed. The congregation grew in size so quickly that it soon outgrew this building, and a new church was built on that site in 1861.
The top left photo is a view of how that church looked in the late 1800’s, and the photo on the top right is the same view today which is the site of a city parking lot. The bottom image is from an 1887 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map and we highlighted the church’s location in red on the NW corner of S. Monroe and Madison Streets. Tomorrow – more history to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Trinity United Church of Christ.
