Less than half of pregnant people ages 18 to 49 were vaccinated against the flu as of March 2023, compared with almost two-thirds in March 2020, per CDC data. ACOG recommends that everyone who is pregnant or planning a pregnancy get their flu shot to protect themselves and their newborn after birth.

ACOG recommends the RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccine (Abrysvo) if you are 32 to 36 weeks pregnant from September to January.

The vaccine creates antibodies that passes to the fetus which can protect your baby for the first 6 months after birth against RSV. RSV spreads in the fall and winter and usually causes mild cold like symptoms that resolves in 1-2 weeks. But in young infants, the lower respiratory infection is the leading cause of hospitalization (with some requiring oxygen, intravenous fluids, and manual ventilation).

*You can get the RSV vaccine at the same time as other vaccines recommended during pregnancy.

If you decide not to get the vaccine during pregnancy, Nirsevimab (contains lab-made antibodies and is not a vaccine) is an injection that can be given to babies after birth to protect them against RSV.
