The flash from a camera occurs faster than the pupil can close. As a result, much of the bright light from the flash passes into the eye through the pupil, reflects off the fundus at the back of the eye, and then out through the pupil. The camera records the reflected light. The main cause of the red color is the large amount of blood in the choroid, located behind the retina.

You may never look at red eyes in photos the same way again!
