Coping skills are the activities and behaviors we use to process, manage, and recover from stress.
✅Healthy coping skills help regulate the nervous system, support emotional processing, and move us toward positive psychological states like reward, meaning, connection, and joy.
❌Unhealthy coping skills may provide temporary relief, but often prolong stress and reinforce negative states such as anxiety, depression, and dread.
Unhealthy coping can look like:
• Doom scrolling
• Substance or alcohol use
• Overindulging (even in a “good” thing)
Healthy coping can look like:
• Exercise or movement
• Nourishing your body
• Watching a favorite movie
• Journaling
• Meditation
• Calling someone you trust
• And yes, skateboarding

Do you feel better afterward, or worse?
