One thing to note is that Patañjali started his path to enlightenment with focusing on how we treat others. As we hold space for others and their humanity, we begin to cleanse our internal ideologies so that we can be with what is, rather than what we are conditioned to believe should be. Instead of othering people, by race, nationality, religious preference etc., we begin to see everyone as human and divine.

The practice of yoga is the practice of unlearning our conditioning so that we can abide in Absolute Truth. This is enlightenment.

The next posts about the niyama, are reflections on how to participate with that unlearning. 💕

The last yama of the first limb of yoga is aparigraha. This yama refers to grasping onto more than what serves us, and is often thought about as hoarding. While we think of this hoarding materialistically, we can also look at hoarding as taking in excess sensory stimulation.

Continuously engaging with social media can be a powerful way of keeping in touch with the world, but it also can quickly become a habit of harm. Doom scrolling and refreshing the screen doesn’t always provide new insights or information, and can overload our nervous system.

Hoarding information doesn’t guarantee a different outcome of witnessed atrocities and atrocity should never become entertainment. Finding balance between staying informed and educated without becoming overburdened/addicted is key.

Learn what’s needed. Be soft with the rest.

Happy Holi! 🌈

Holi is an ancient Hindu festival celebrating the return of spring and the triumph of good over evil! 🙌 🌈 🙌

This year, may we continue to be illuminated with truth, and may that truth reveal that love always wins! 🌈💕🌈

One of the biggest compliments we can get as guides of yoga, is the continuous support and trust of those in our communities. And this month we want to shine a light of gratitude on our beloved students and see what yoga is about from their perspective.

Our lovely student Ro has been practicing with Samantha for over a decade! Check out her words here and come flow with her…and us! 💕

Brahmacarya is the practice of preserving one’s vital energy. It’s imperative to act in the face of injustice, it’s also mandatory that we take care of our own health and well being while recognizing our privilege of being able to do so.

Yoga as a practice for all humanity doesn’t let us off the hook of advocating for others, but it does ask us to consider how we are using our energy. Fighting for the sake of being right often pushes others away from our perspectives and depletes us in the process. Instead, volunteering, researching places to donate to, and having healthy conversations allow us to make change in the world with less efforting.

How do you choose to spend your energy?

✨ Happy Mahāśivarātri! ✨

On this sacred day, we honor Lord Śiva as a symbol of transformation, reminding us that illumination always triumphs over ignorance.

May this Mahāśivarātri inspire you to embrace impermanence, release attachments, and step into the flow of life with grace and wisdom. 💙

Stories are important. They bring to life people’s perspectives and explain reasons why we exist the way we exist. They have power when told in safe spaces, have the potential to heal ourselves and others, and they keep our loved ones alive.

When stories are taken out of context, or deliberately altered to fit an agenda, we use other people to justify our practice of division. We use others as scapegoats to our own agenda and when it’s out of context, we can usually safely assume that agenda is not aligned with the betterment of all humanity. If you have to lie, and use others to lie, we know there is no good gained.

There is no right story for a wrong agenda.
