I don't know how many of you know this, but I had a 4-year period in my life where I was only sleeping 2-3 hours per night until my NP forced me to start working on my sleep and the stress in my life otherwise, she was going to put me on a very strong medication.

Remember if you don't get good sleep everything else the next day will suck - including your energy, brain function, clarity, mood, hormones, appetite, motivation, heart health, blood sugars, weight and body composition.

Here they are summarized:

1. Quantity - how many hours of sleep are you getting? Most people need 7-9 hours each day. If we don't get the right amount of sleep, our hunger and appetite hormones are dysregulated, and we end up eating more food because we never feel satiated and we always feel hungry. We also end up gravitating towards eating more carbs and processed foods Also the shorter your sleep the shorter your life.

2. Quality - how many times are you awake throughout the night. You want the total time that you're sleeping vs the amount of time that you're in bed to be greater than 80% (You can track this with sleep efficiency if you wear a sleep tracker like Oura)

3. Regularity (I like to call it consistency) - keep your sleep time and wake time consistent plus or minus 30 min. Regularity helps decrease your risk of mortality.

4. Timing - this is based on your chronotype -are you a morning type, night type or neutral type? Generally speaking, 10 pm - 6 am is an ideal time to sleep and wake. Although there are some people who naturally attune to getting to sleep earlier and some people who prefer to get to bed a bit later. Our body does the most healing and repair during this time frame.

All four of these elements are important when it comes to sleep. You can't just get a good quantity of sleep but skip out on consistent bedtime and wake time. You have to try to get all 4 dialled in.
