Congratulations to our July Good Works for Horses honorees! 🎉

We are excited to spotlight Dr. James Lewis, a member of Damascus Equine Associates in Mount Airy, Maryland, for volunteering his services with Safe Haven Equine Warriors, a nonprofit whose primary focus is to rescue, rehabilitate, retrain and rehome equines either suffering from or in imminent danger of abuse or neglect.

Dr. Lewis serves on the advisory council and supports the rescue’s mission in multiple ways. Volunteering his expertise to oversee the health of the rescue’s herd and treating often difficult conditions to give rescued horses a new lease on life, Dr. Lewis leads difficult discussions with sensible compassion.

We would also like to congratulate runners-up Dr. Keith Bogatch, a racetrack veterinarian based in Elmont, New York, and Dr. Alyssa King, owner of King's Kreatures, in Yoder, Colorado.

The Good Works for Horses campaign, graciously sponsored by AAEP Educational Partner Zoetis Equine, honors AAEP-member practitioners whose volunteer efforts have a positive impact on the equine community.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed a backyard flock detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Pitkin County, Colorado. This finding is the first case of HPAI in domestic poultry in Colorado and confirmed cases can be tracked at ag.colorado.gov/hpai

If you are a backyard flock owner, it’s critical to increase your biosecurity measures by keeping your flock closed (not introducing new birds), decreasing interactions between domestic and wild birds, and keeping feed away from wild birds. Please report any sick or dead birds to the State Veterinarian’s office at 303-869-9130.

Vesicular stomatitis cases have been confirmed in 20 Colorado counties.
The Colorado Department of Agriculture has confirmed cases of vesicular stomatitis (VSV) in the following counties: Adams, Alamosa, Archuleta, Boulder, Broomfield, Conejos, Delta, Douglas, Gilpin, Grand, Jefferson, La Plata, Larimer, Mesa, Montezuma, Montrose, Morgan, Ouray, Pueblo, and Weld counties in Colorado. There are currently 254 quarantined locations statewide, and 177 released quarantines.

ALL VSV cases are important for the epidemiology and management of this outbreak and MUST be reported to the State Veterinarian’s Office at 303-869-9130, regardless if the owner and veterinarian decide to have their livestock tested or choose to manage as positive premises based on the presence of typical clinical signs without testing.

OutThere Colorado has since corrected their story here: https://www.outtherecolorado.com/virus-affects-livestock-in-14-colorado-countiesI

It was highly misleading to say that Vesicular Stomatitis virus is a rabies-like virus. Both viruses belong to the same family, Rhabdoviridae, but that classification is based on viral structure alone. The two diseases have no similarities in transmission, clinical signs, or outcome.

Vesicular stomatitis (VSV) is a virus from the genus Vesiculovirus. VSV is a viral disease that causes blisters and ulcers on the mouth, feet, ears, and udder of cattle, horses, and swine, and occasionally mules, donkeys, sheep, goats, llamas, and alpacas. Here is a technical fact sheet on Vesicular Stomatitis Virus:http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/Factsheets/pdfs/vesicular_stomatitis.pdf

The rabies virus is from the genus Lyssavirus. Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS) of mammals and has an extremely high case fatality rate. Here is a technical fact sheet on Rabies Virus:http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/Factsheets/pdfs/rabies.pdf
