How to choose the right lipstick for brighter teeth? Let your lipstick make your teeth shine.

Orange-red lips are definitely having more than their 15 minutes of fame. Today’s runway looks and glossy mags have us running to the beauty counters for these hot lipstick shades. But wearing this trendy citrus pop can be tough on your teeth. Slick it on and all that whitening 101 you've been doing disappears with just one smile. If your lipstick choice can make your teeth look less than pearly, what’s a girl to do?

When choosing your lipstick shade, keep one thing in mind – you can’t reinvent the wheel. The color wheel is the magic trick to understanding the love-hate relationship between your lipstick shade and a brighter smile.

Blue and orange/yellow are opposite from each other on the color wheel. Since opposites attract, blue tones cancel out orange and yellow tones when they sit together. Translation: lipsticks formulated with a blue base will help cancel out any orange or yellow tones on your teeth. You might consider them a quick whitening treatment in a pretty little tube.

Another tip:Get glossy: These formulas amp up the wattage of your grin, as opposed to a lipstick that's more matte, which can make lips look dry and teeth look dingy.

Exercise caution with sports drinks. The same carbohydrates that help reinvigorate leg muscles can wreak havoc on your teeth.

The high sugar content and acidity levels of sports drinks have long been linked to increased tooth decay in children, teens, and athletes. The high carbohydrate consumption, including sports drinks and bars can lower the mouth's pH below the critical mark of 5.5". This can lead to dental erosion and caries. The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. Water has a pH level of 7.

Try to cut down on the cavity-causing acids and carbohydrates in your mouth by alternating between sipping sports drinks and water. Water fights tooth decay by rinsing the acids from teeth, keeping the mouth lubricated, and aiding in the production of healthy saliva.

We asked Paula, our Registered Dental Hygienist for over 35 years, what questions her patients ask her most.

Why do I need to fix my teeth, if they don’t hurt?

Her response to this question is: you don’t want to wait until it hurts. It is better to take care of the problem while it is small.

Paula feels making dental health a habit is extremely important, force yourself daily to make brushing and flossing a routine. Take 5 minutes a day to care for your mouth. Just like the Nike commercial “Just do it”.
