Check out how Advocates, Inc. Friendship Project helped Callie find meaningful connections.

Callie felt isolated and lonely when she moved to the suburbs from the city to care for her mom.
She had been receiving services from Advocates when she heard about the organization’s Friendship Project.

What is the Friendship Project?
The program matches community members with people facing life challenges to create meaningful connections.
Participants connect:
🔹 In person
🔹By phone and text
🔹Attend virtual and community activities together
🔹Build authentic friendships

The pairings bring joy while reducing the negative health impacts of loneliness and social isolation.

While waiting to be matched with a volunteer, Callie started attending Friendship Project events and had an idea. She decided to volunteer while she waited for a match.

Friendship Project manager Maryellen Killeen knew just the friend for Callie. “The Friendship Project makes thoughtful pairings. I really feel like our match came along at a perfect time, for myself and my buddy,” Callie shares.

Callie was matched with the perfect friend. They attended Advocates events together, such as Woo Sox games and a game night at Natick Mall. They also enjoy doing crafts, going shopping, and running errands together.

The Friendship Project has given Callie the confidence to broaden her horizons. She has even been matched with a second friend.

Did you know? 1 in 6 people experience a significant disability. This is estimated to be about 1.3 billion people.

Today is recognized as International Day of Persons with Disabilities, promoted by the United Nations. This day highlights the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with disabilities. The goal is to raise awareness of their experiences across all areas of political, social, economic, and cultural life.

This year's theme is fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress. People living with disabilities and their families often face significant barriers that make it harder to achieve social development goals.

Our partner agency, Advocates, Inc. provides comprehensive services for people living with disabilities or other life challenges.

Some programs include:
🔹 Day & Employment Services: Providing a path to self-exploration and growth for adults with disabilities.
🔹Developmental Services: Helping individuals achieve their goals and reach for their dreams.
🔹Independent Living: Providing support to foster independence.
🔹Shared Living: Creating new homes and lifelong bonds by connecting individuals with disabilities to devoted community members.

Check out the special bond between Maryann and Jandira.

Jandira is the caregiver for 70-year-old Maryann. Despite Maryann’s limited ability to speak, Jandira says, “I know exactly what she wants. It’s a beautiful thing.”

🌟A New family:
Maryann became part of the family when she moved into Jandira’s home through Advocates, Inc. Shared Living program 10 years ago. Maryann moved in with Jandira, her two children, and Sue, another participant in the program.

🌟Freedom and Independence:
The Shared Living program gives Maryann the freedom and independence to do what she loves. “She can voice her wants and needs. Maryann chooses what she wants to wear, and what she wants to watch on TV—she likes old movies,” says Jandira.

🌟 New Experiences:
Maryann helped evaluate group homes and influence policies through her role on the Advocates Program Committee. Today, she goes to Advocates Day habilitation program in Ashland.
In their free time, Maryann and Jandira have road-tripped in a camper to Florida, explored New Hampshire, gone apple picking, and enjoyed concerts, plays, and even the casino.

🌟A New Friend in the Home:
When Sue passed away, Maryann quietly grieved. She missed her friend.

Not long ago, they met June, a 75-year-old woman who was also in the Shared Living program. After instantly connecting, June moved in. “June adds so much happiness to our lives. They both bring such meaning to my life,” she adds.

A caretaker, companion, cook, and fierce advocate, Jandira views Maryann and June as beloved extensions of her family.
