Irlen Center Boston

Irlen Center Boston The Irlen Boston screens children and adults for Irlen Syndrome that is a light sensitivity disorder that causes distortions in print & other problems.

Irlen Boston is in its 25th year of helping children and adults. As Irlen Screeners and Irlen Diagnosticians we are trained to do an initial assessment to determine weather or not a client has Irlen Syndrome (previously known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome or sometimes called Visual Stress), and we are the only Diagnostic clinic in the New England area to do Irlen Diagnostic for Irlen Spectral F

ilters. Irlen Syndrome causes IRLEN SYNDROME IS A PERCEPTUAL PROCESSING DISORDER
It is not an optical problem. It is a problem with the brain’s ability to process visual information. This problem tends to run in families and is not currently identified by standardized educational, psychological, optometric, or medical tests. This problem can manifest itself differently for each individual. Irlen Syndrome is not remediable and is often a lifetime barrier to learning and performance. SIGNS OF IRLEN SYNDROME
Light Sensitivity
Reading Problems
Headaches and Migraines
Attention and Concentration Problems
Strain and Fatigue
Problems with Depth Perception
Print or Environmental Distortions
distortions in print, difficulties in reading, headaches and migraines and many other issues that effect those who have it. Irlen Syndrome is about perception and light sensivity. It effects nearly 15% of the general population. 47-52% of those individuals with reading and learning problems as well as children in Special Education. 33% of children with ADHD may just have Irlen Syndrome. People on the autism spectrum can also benefit from Irlen spectral Filtered Lenses 30% people wiho suffered a TBI brain injury can also benefit from the Irlen Spectral Filters by allowing the brain to relax and heal. We are members of the Association and are licensed under the Irlen Institute in Long Beach, California, USA. and maintain the high professional standards by its members.

HOW CAN A GOOD READER BE A POOR SPELLER? Could they have Irlen Syndrome?
* Reading requires us to RECOGNISE a word.
* Spelling requires us to RECALL the letters and their order in a word.
* They are different skills but many good readers are also good spellers.
* Many of our clients are good readers but poor spellers.
IMAGINE THIS..
White paper is used in schools and schools have fluorescent lights AND spelling lists are usually provided on white paper. This combination causes visual distortions for students with Irlen Syndrome. These distortions can include:
* Letters change positions within words.
e.g., "letter" could look like "lettre"
* Letters change form due to parts fading.
e.g., "E" could look like "F" if the bottom line fades away.
* Words can blur so much that it is impossible to see them clearly, so how can they recall how they are spelt?
AS A PARENT HOW CAN YOU HELP?
* Copy the spelling list onto a sheet of each of the following coloured papers.
* Blue, Pink, Green, Lilac. (make sure that the colour is not very pale or very fluorescent or bright).
Ask your child to select the coloured paper that makes it easier to see the words.
* Break up the list into small groups. E.g., if a child is having problems spelling, it is better to help them to learn 5 words properly than to ask them to remember say, 20 words at once. It can be very overwhelming for a child who is struggling to look at a long list of words that they have to learn. Talk to the classroom teacher if necessary and explain what and why you are doing this.
Hopefully, the information provided above can help your child develop their spelling skills.
If you suspect that your child may have Irlen Syndrome you can do a Self Test on our website. www.irlendyslexia.com

Did you know??? The overlap between ADHD and Irlen Syndrome in approximately 30% of individuals is likely due to shared sensory processing challenges and their impact on attention and behavior.

Irlen symptoms can be mistaken for ADHD (e.g., distractibility from visual discomfort). This overlap might inflate perceived co-occurrence rates if Irlen isn’t recognized independently.

The visual strain of Irlen can worsen focus and self-regulation, particularly in those with ADHD, compounding their symptoms.

Addressing both conditions is crucial, as treating one without considering the other may leave residual challenges.

Comment ‘help’ below and we will send you a self test.

Irlen Syndrome does not discriminate! Up to 14% of the population have Irlen Syndrome, and almost half of those who experience difficulties with reading.
Some of the most intelligent people in the world have Irlen Syndrome. It occurs regardless of gender, race, intelligence, or age.
The coping mechanisms and strategies we employ to cope with our symptoms show how clever and resourceful we truly are! So don't ever let anyone make you feel that you are less!

While light sensitivity is not limited to these groups but these are predominantly a symptom associated with each of these conditions. People with light sensitivity often experience discomfort, migraines, or visual distortions under certain lighting conditions, such as fluorescent lights or bright sunlight.

How can custom colored lenses help?

Irlen lenses are designed to help with light sensitivity by filtering out the specific wavelengths of light that overstimulate the brain. Irlen lenses reduce glare, soften harsh lighting, and create a more comfortable visual environment, allowing individuals to process light more effectively and with less strain.

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VISUAL PERCEPTION AND READING DIFFICULTIES OR DYSLEXIA.
For years there has been an argument put forth that reading difficulties or dyslexia have no direct link to vision or visual perception.
However there has been research done back in 2017 in Turkey which shows a direct connection between difficulties in visual perception and difficulties in reading.https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1147376.pdf
The International Dyslexia Association itself has also been looking into these same connections as far back as 2016, and again found a link between children adults with poor visuospatial awareness and dyslexia.
https://dyslexiaida.org/what-is-the-role-of-the-visual-system-in-reading-and-dyslexia/
As they agree and believe more work needs to be done to determine how to treat these deficits to improve visuospatial awareness and therefore improve reading, there is a treatment already available.
Irlen Spectral Filters worn as glasses calm the visual cortex, improve visual perception and therefore improve reading in those with reading difficulties and some diagnosed as being dyslexic.

IRLEN LENSES DO NOT TEACH SOMEONE TO READ!
Irlen lenses are merely an aide to help someone see the words more clearly, focus on the page and start to learn the words more efficiently.
Unfortunately there are a lot of people in the community who believe Irlen lenses do not work because their child, or some one else's child isn't instantly a good reader, or that their child makes a huge leap in reading ability but then that progress slows down.
WHY IS THAT?
This is because their learning does not continue past their current ability. For example a Year 5 child may be a very poor reader, they get their glasses and make a huge jump to maybe a Year 4 level. But they have missed out on the foundations such as phonetics and sight word knowledge that allows them to keep moving forward and learning new words. Without intensive revision, reading practice at home as well as at school further progress will be slow.
IRLEN LENSES DO NOT TEACH READING, JUST GIVE THE ABILITY TO SEE AND CONCENTRATE!

Irlen Spectral Filters are better than other colored lenses because they're not just a colored lens. Irlen Spectral Filters are the result of an in-depth diagnostic process designed to find the individualized color formula that works just right for you. The Irlen Method is a dynamic process of color selection that changes with you as your brain grows, changes, and heals. Irlen is a process, not a product. No other colored lens can compare.

Tell us Irlen can be hereditary without telling us it’s hereditary. We’ll go first….(Grandfather and granddaughter💜)

These are the faces of Irlen Syndrome.

Their symptoms were totally different and neither had ANY IDEA until they took the Irlen self-test.

For her- white computer and cell phone screens and pages in books bothered her eyes, words would float off the page after reading for a little while, she would get headaches frequently and her brand new prescription glasses didn’t make the words crystal clear on the page.

For him- eyes always hurt when looking at his cell phone, sunlight really bothered his eyes, itchy, watering eyes from the constant strain.

🕶️ Above the surface people see “different” colored lenses, being worn by people, whether it’s light or dark outside, whether they’re indoors or outdoors.

🕶️ What they don’t see is how the glasses help them to see words, the world and all its beauty as it actually is (not even tinted by the colored lenses) with the help of custom colored filtered spectral filtered Irlen Lenses.

Let’s break the stigma and continue to spread the word on Irlen Syndrome that affects up to 15% of the general population.

Illiteracy is among the most frequent and damning critiques leveled against Gen Alpha online. It is also empirically true of a demographic whose median age is 6½.
In California, children are expected to be able to read around December of first grade, meaning the majority of alphas should have been literate by New Year's Day.
Yet thousands are still struggling, making reading among the starkest reminders of a pandemic most teens and adults would prefer to move past.
Alphas "are some of the hardest-hit kids when it comes to reading," said Shervaughnna Anderson-Byrd, director of the California Reading and Literature Project. "Only 43% of our students are on grade level in California."

Children born from 2010 to 2024 are part of “Generation Alpha,” the demographic successor to Gen Z. They are already being called “feral,” illiterate” and “doomed,” with bad parenting by millennials and the influence of technology blamed for bad behaviors.
