Did you know that peanut brittle is an American candy that has been around for over a century. The cruncy peanut texture and flavor is distinct; in addition, while cooking the product to the correct temperature the aroma is undeniable. Peanut brittle dates back to the late 19th century because peanuts were a popular in America. The very first peanut brittle recipe was during this time with lots of variations. 1893 is when one of the earliest know recipes was published in the Good Housekeeping magazine. The recipe, titled “Peanut Brittle,” called for peanuts, sugar, cream of tartar, and water. The mixture was cooked to a hard-ball stage, then spread onto a greased surface and allowed to cool and harden. This may not be the very first recipe because the ancient Chinese made similar candy called “dragon’s beard” from peanuts and sugar.
While it’s difficult to pinpoint a single creator of peanut brittle it is the season to eat and be merry and that is exactly what we did at Parkview Haven. Ron & Nancy Schambach provided a demonstration on making peanut brittle, with the help of Curt & Valerie Leman. This precious couple has been making peanut brittle for more than 50 years. Nancy talked how so many people would just wait for them to make it each year. There are favorite pans, a marble board that must be warmed and many other special techniques. They made it look so easy, but it was definitely made with LOVE. Nothing beats a sample made with LOVE. Check out the pictures. THANK YOU, Ron & Nancy & Valerie & Curt, for sharing your time and love for those living at Parkview Haven (also the samples)!!
