Around 6 months, your baby’s iron needs increase-and their natural iron stores from birth start to decrease. This is why introducing iron-rich foods when baby is developmentally ready is so important 💡

🧠 Iron plays a key role in:
• Brain development
• Growth
• Learning + memory

Breastfed babies:
Breast milk is amazing, but naturally low in iron—so adding iron-rich foods at 6 months is essential to meet needs.

Formula-fed babies:
Most formulas are iron-fortified, so babies are getting a good amount—but still benefit from iron-rich complementary foods as they begin solids.

🥩 Iron-rich foods to offer:
• Soft shredded meats (beef, chicken, turkey)
• Iron-fortified infant cereals
• Beans, lentils, tofu
• Eggs

🍓 Pair with vitamin C to boost absorption:
• Strawberries
• Oranges
• Broccoli
• Bell peppers
• Tomatoes

✨ Example:
Iron-fortified oatmeal + mashed strawberries
Shredded chicken + soft roasted peppers

Starting solids isn’t just about exposure—it’s about meeting nutritional needs during a critical time of growth.

You don’t have to do it perfectly—just start offering and keep showing up at the table 🤍

🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀

Today we’re celebrating with a little extra GREEN 💚

Just a reminder -it’s totally normal if your baby doesn’t love green veggies right away. Foods like broccoli can have stronger flavors compared to sweeter favorites like fruit, and that’s okay!

The key is consistent exposure 👏 No pressure, just opportunities to explore!

Babies aren’t born loving every food, so many different textures and smells for them to learn. Touching, smelling, and tasting is just part of the process ! My girl took 10x before tasting broccoli 🥦 (and sometimes it takes even more tries!) So keep putting those greens on the plate 🍽️

You’re building familiarity, confidence, and lifelong habits with every bite.

Costco purse snacks for busy moms 👜✨
Because sometimes you’re running errands, chasing kids, or stuck in pickup lines and suddenly realize… you only had your kiddos crust from Pb and J for lunch. 🤦🏻‍♀️ We all have been there!

As a dietitian and mom, I keep a few non-perishable grab-and-go options in my bag so Im prepared for crazy mom life.

Here are a few finds I recommend:

🥩 Kirkland Grass-Fed Beef Sticks
Great protein boost that actually keeps you full. Pair with just fruit bar or crackers if you want a more balanced snack.

🥜 Protein Energy Bites
Made mostly from dates and nuts, so you get quick energy plus a little protein and fat to help sustain you between meals.

🍓 That’s It Fruit Bars
Literally just fruit. A simple way to get fiber and natural carbs when you need a quick pick-me-up. Pair with Kirkland‘s meat stick for a balanced snack!

🥾 Power Up Premium Trail Mix
A great balanced snack with carbs, fats, and protein. Would also be a great addition to your oatmeal or Greek yogurt.

🥭 Superfood Smoothie Pouches
Shelf-stable smoothie made with fruit, healthy fats, and plant protein. Perfect when you want something quick but a little more filling.

✨ Dietitian tip: Keeping simple options in your purse can help keep your energy and mood steady during busy days.

What’s a snack you always keep in your bag?

In a world full of nutrition misinformation, diet culture, and fear around food -I’m proud to be a dietitian and qualified voice advocating for nutrition education.

As a pediatric dietitian and a mom, my passion is helping families cut through the noise and raise kids who feel confident around food, trust their bodies, and grow up without the shame and stress that so many of us were. Kids deserve to grow by trusting their bodies and learn how to nourish them - not be stressed or fearing food.

Helping take the stress out of feeding and bringing balance back to food conversations is truly the best part of this work.

So grateful for this profession and the amazing RDs making a difference every day!

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week 💜

As a pediatric dietitian and a mom, I see how early food rules, negative body talk, and “good vs. bad” labels can quietly shape the way children relate to eating and their bodies.

And here’s what I want parents to know:
You don’t have to create perfection.
You just have to create safety.

Food doesn’t need morality.
Bodies don’t need criticism.
Growth doesn’t need fear.

When we shift our language to neutral, when we model flexibility, when we let our kids see us eat without guilt - we are actively protecting their relationship with food.

This week, and every week, I’m committed to helping families raise kids who trust their bodies.

If you’re navigating feeding challenges, food fears, or body image concerns with your child - you’re not alone. Early, compassionate, weight-neutral support matters. 💜

💕Happy Valentine’s Day! 💕
Many of your kiddos will be coming home a bag full of candy and sweets 🍭🧁🍫 I think many of our first reactions are “I gotta hide this” or “I need to throw these away asap” or “they don’t need all this sugar” or “they want sweets all the time “ anyone ? 🙋🏻‍♀️
I get it. Our job as parents are to keep them healthy and we think controlling and using sweets as a “treat” is what’s best. But when we make as “off limits” and doesn’t allow our kids to learn self regulate their food (sweets or not!) it actually does the opposite. When we control and restrict their choices, it makes the sweets MORE appealing and want them more frequently or even feel guilty when they do eat it!
Instead I suggest you:
💕 Allow them access to have some when they get home.
💕 Talk about the sweets neutrally and talk about 5 senses (ie: it’s fruity and sweet !)
💕 Don’t hide or throw away, put it with their other food in pantry or drawers.
💕 Offer these foods normally with a snack or meal, NOT only in addition if they eat their other food.
It can feel scary thinking “they are going to eat too much” which they may at first, especially if it’s been off limits to them. If you are consistent with offering sweets with dinner or snacks, they won’t find them necessarily so attractive or “special treats”. But this will help them to : ⭐️Continue to self regulate and foster a healthy relationship with ALL food ⭐️ Recognize food NEUTRALLY and not feeling guilty. ⭐️ Will allow them to choose variety of foods without labeling them as good or bad. ⭐️ As well as learning which foods help them feel their best ! 😊

🎃👻🍬Happy Halloween ! 🎃 👻 🍬
My candy is ready for Trick-or-Treaters ! I know Halloween can be a little “tricky” for parents to navigate through, so here are some healthful tips for the holiday! ☺️
🎃Provide a nutritious, balanced meal pre-trick-or-treating (however, do not force children to eat this food in exchange for treats later - it’s not an “eat this or else” situation)
🎃 Parents job is set boundaries about “when” and “where”Halloween snacks will be consumed while Little’s can still happily enjoy it ! (ex. at the table during snack time) 🕰
🎃 Allow children to choose which treats they want to consume from their stash - and enjoy some candy with them !
🎃Offer nutrient-dense snacks along with Halloween candy. Makes fun pumpkin charcuterie board w/cheese, crackers, and veggies available to snack on.
🎃Continue to provide structure around candy while allowing child freedom to gauge their hunger and satiety .
🎃Kiddos are asking for constant candy? A good reminder is “I am sorry candy is available at this time. We can add to lunch tomorrow !” This can go for any food.
I encourage parents to offer these “fun foods” regularly and allow children the ability to choose to enjoy them or not ! Children who establish positive food behaviors will be able to self-regulate their intake and “treats” the same way they approach other foods. 🎃 And remember candy may give some big reactions either way- and it’s ok. It’s an exciting time for them and there is not a 💯 perfect way to go about this ! This won’t alter your kiddos way of eating permanently. 🧡

What is your approach to Halloween candy with your kiddos🍬 🍫 ?

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving 🍁🦃!
And yes, I do mean it when I say it’s ok if your little ones only opt for the rolls (or mashed potatoes and crackers) !
If they opt for the all the carbs for their meal choices keep these things in mind :
🤎 Keep your expectations low. Holiday meals can be overwhelming to kids. There are lots of different foods around once a year so the rolls are safe and familiar.
🤎 Start the day with a routine of normal, nourishing breakfast with a good balance of protein, carbs, and some fiber.
🤎 Bring some snacks you know they accept well to avoid some meal meltdowns so they have something post meal.
🤎 Don’t allow others to pressure to eat foods they don’t want to eat or when they are full. Family members mean well, but it will be helpful to set some boundaries like “they are eating what their bodies need today and can choose to try what they want from their plate”
🤎 And mostly today is only ONE day.
Wishing you all a happy and carb filled Thanksgiving! ☺️
