Fun fact Friday: DYK the alignment of the first cervical vertebra (the atlas) plays a crucial role in maintaining balance and proper posture while walking and running on two legs. The atlas supports the weight of the skull and is essential for adjusting head position. It helps ensure that our gaze remains level, which is important for coordinating movement and maintaining balance during bipedal locomotion. If the atlas is misaligned, it can lead to subtle changes in posture and gait, showing how even small anatomical features have a big impact on how we move!

Fun Fact Friday
Last week we talked about mammals that have more than 7 cervical vertebra. This week we will talk about species that have LESS than 7. Believe it or not, the TWO TOED SLOTH has only 5-6 cervical vertebra (unlike his relative, the THREE TOED SLOTH). Can you guess the other mammal species that often has less then 7?

This is a pretty long podcast, and goes into a lot of depth, but we strongly recommend giving it a listen.

When it comes to exercise, do you do “all the things” and seem like you’re spinning your wheels? Maybe the scale was moving a lot for the first couple months, but then progress stalled (or reversed)? Our metabolisms are very complex and scientists are learning more and more each year. Turns out that the old adage that says you can’t outrun a bad diet is true. It appears that your body may even “cap” the total amount of calories you burn in the long run regardless of how much you exercise. Herman Pontzer MD recently wrote a book called “Burn” detailing this phenomenon (we will be writing an upcoming book review about it).

Yesterday we asked which other mammal has more than seven cervical vertebra.
The answer is…..
*drumroll*
The giant ant eater which can have up to as many as 9!
Most mammals (including giraffes) only have seven cervical vertebrae. Very few species have more or less. Next week, we will ask about which species have LESS than seven cervical vertebra.
