What is Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?
SCD is a serious inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells, causing them to become hard, sticky, and shaped like a sickle. These cells can block blood flow and lead to serious health problems.
Common Signs & Symptoms (CDC)
• Chronic fatigue (anemia)
• Sudden pain episodes (sudden, severe pain in chest, abdomen, joints)
• Swelling in hands and feet
• Frequent infections
• Delayed growth or puberty
• Vision problems
• Stroke symptoms (weakness, numbness, speech issues)
• Chest pain, fever, breathing difficulty (acute chest syndrome)
