Remembering those that gave their lives to force increased safety standards.

Fifty years ago, 26 men went to work at the Scotia Mine in Letcher County, Kentucky — and didn’t come home.

On March 9, 1976, an explosion deep inside the mine killed 15 miners. Two days later, a second explosion claimed the lives of 11 more men.

Their names are carved into a state historical marker on Highway 119 near Oven Fork:

The Scotia tragedy led to the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. Kentucky underground coal mining has recorded zero fatalities for three consecutive years — a testament to how far the industry has come and to the legacy these 26 men left behind.

As an industry and as a community, we remember them.
