🌱Rooted in Regulation Micro-Learning: Polyvagal Theory & Trauma

Did you know one nerve plays a huge role in how safe—or unsafe—you feel?

🧠 It’s called the vagus nerve, and it’s like your body's internal surveillance system, constantly scanning for danger or safety. When trauma hits, this system can get stuck in survival mode—hyper-alert 🏃‍♀️ or completely shut down 💤.

This can look like:

Constant anxiety or restlessness

Numbness or disconnection

Feeling unsafe even in calm situations

As Dr. Stephen Porges, creator of Polyvagal Theory, says:

“Safety is the treatment.”

💡 That means healing begins when we feel safe—in our bodies, in relationships, and in our environments. Polyvagal Theory helps us understand the biology behind that safety, and how we can support regulation from the bottom up.

💬 Ever noticed your body feeling unsafe even when your brain says everything’s fine? You’re not alone.

💡 That means healing begins when we feel safe in our bodies, in relationships, and in our environments. Polyvagal Theory helps us understand the biology behind that safety, and how we can support regulation from the bottom up.

🌱 Rooted in Regulation Micro-Learning: Trauma

From our very first days, relationships teach us how to feel safe—or not.
👶💞 The way caregivers respond to our needs shapes how we handle stress for the rest of our lives.

🔐 Secure attachment = resilience.
🌪️ Insecure attachment = a nervous system more vulnerable to trauma.

As Dr. Daniel Siegel beautifully says:

“The roots of resilience… are to be found in the sense of being understood by and existing in the mind and heart of a loving, attuned, and self-possessed other.”

In other words: when someone really sees us and stays with us—especially early on—it wires our brain for regulation, trust, and strength under stress.

🧠 Trauma disrupts this, but the good news? Relational healing is possible. Safe, attuned connection—now—can rewire what was once miswired.

💬 Ever had a relationship that helped you feel safer in your body? Drop a 💚 if someone’s presence helped build your resilience.

🌱 Rooted in Regulation Micro-Learning: Attachment & The Anxious Attachment Style
Ever felt “too much” in a relationship? Like you needed constant reassurance or feared being left behind?

😟 That might be anxious attachment—a pattern that often begins in childhood when caregiving is inconsistent. Sometimes your needs were met… other times, not so much. That unpredictability wires the brain to crave closeness but also fear abandonment.

As John Bowlby described:

“Anxious attachment is the result of inconsistent caregiving, creating a preoccupation with attachment figures.”

So if you:

Worry about being “too needy”

Feel anxious when someone pulls away

Constantly seek validation in relationships

…you’re not broken. Your nervous system learned this to protect you.

💚 Healing anxious attachment means learning how to self-soothe AND connect with safe, consistent others.

💭 What’s one way you calm your nervous system when you’re feeling anxious in relationships?

🌱 Rooted in Regulation Micro-Learning: Trauma
When Trauma Overwhelms Us: Dissociation

Ever felt like you were watching life happen from outside your body? Or like your mind just checked out during a tough moment? That might’ve been dissociation—your brain’s built-in safety switch when things feel too overwhelming.

🧠 “Dissociation is the escape when no other escape is possible.” – Janina Fisher

When there’s no safe way out, the brain protects us by disconnecting. It’s not weakness—it’s survival. This is especially common in trauma, where fight or flight weren’t options, and freeze or “numbing out” took over.

✨ Learning to recognize dissociation helps us build compassion for ourselves and others. It’s the brain’s way of saying: “I couldn’t handle this then—but I’m here now, trying.”

💬 Have you ever experienced dissociation without realizing it at the time?
Drop a 💭 if this resonates, or share (if you're comfortable) below. Let’s grow understanding, one post at a time.

🌳 Rooted in Regulation Micro-Learning: Polyvagal Week 6 🌳

🌊 The Dorsal Vagal State – Freeze & Shutdown 🌊
Ever feel numb, disconnected, or completely drained? 🫥
That’s your nervous system hitting the brakes — it’s called dorsal vagal shutdown, a protective state that slows everything down.

💡 As Deb Dana says:

“When survival feels impossible, the body chooses to disappear.”

🌀 It’s not just in your head — it’s your body doing its best to keep you safe.

💫 How Attachment Styles Influence Behavior 💫
Did you know your attachment style could explain how you react in relationships? 🤯
The four main styles—secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized—shape how we connect, trust, and set boundaries.

💡 As Dan Siegel says:

“Our minds are shaped by our relationships, especially early ones.”
