More and more I am seeing chiropractors and PTs offering what they call ‘dry needling’. This is unlicensed acupuncture, plain and simple. A form of orthopedic acupuncture where you are manipulating the muscles and trigger points to treat pain conditions. A ‘dry needle’ is simply that, a filiform acupuncture needle that does not contain any meds or injectable’s (dry). To become ‘a certified dry needler’ all one has to do is take a weekend course with a max Of 27 hours of study and then said dry needler somehow feels qualified to go out and begin inserting needles into their clients to treat their pain conditions, because let’s face it- ACUPUNCTURE in all forms works really well for the treatment of pain- After all it has been around for 1000s of years!
Please do your due diligence and if you are looking for pain relief find a licensed acupuncturist who practices orthopedic style acupuncture. This is far safer and can avoid a lot of undue harm as I have heard many stories of clients being injured or suffering pneumothoraxes (lung punctures) at the hands of unqualified professionals.
To become a licensed acupuncturist one must complete a 3 year master program, 1800 hours of clinical internship in needling techniques while treating patients and pass 3 board exams before you can be qualified enough to insert and manipulate needles in someone as a licensed health care provider.
Let me put it another way: I personally would never as a licensed acupuncturist take a weekend course in chiropractic and then go on to adjust people’s spines.
I wouldn’t take a weekend course in physical therapy techniques and believe it is in my scope of practice to assign rehab exercise programs to clients.
I personally went to school for nutrition before acupuncture school and I still do not feel qualified enough to write diet plans for clients and instead refer them to a licensed dietician since that is in THEIR scope of practice and what THEY do best.
On our website is a reference guide to consider. I guess part of the issue falls on us as licensed acupuncturists to better educate our clients and communities so here it is.
Be safe out there friends! ❤️
