As many of you know, our maternity is closing June 5— a change that affects so many dedicated nurses and staff who have faithfully served our community.

Today I shared a small gesture of appreciation with them. It hardly feels like enough for the countless long shifts, comforting words, and expert care they have given to mothers and babies over the years.

I am incredibly grateful for the JMH team and the difference they have made in so many lives. Thank you for continuing to support them during this transition. I am working with JMH leadership to make the transition for my patients as seamless as possible and will share as I work out more details.

This video explains the struggles Johnson Memorial has had with maternity. Please pray for Dr. Ensley and the other providers and their patients who are transitioning during this time. We will keep you updated when we figure out the next step. Consider reaching out to your state representatives to let your voice be heard that maternity at JMH and other smaller hospitals needs to be preserved.

💙 A Message to My OB-GYN Patients

Many of you may have seen the announcement from Johnson Memorial Health regarding the upcoming transition of maternity services. I want you to hear directly from me.

Please know that my commitment to you—your health, your pregnancies, and your families—has not changed. While my OB/GYN practice will be transitioning as Johnson Memorial phases out maternity care, I am actively working to determine the best next step so I can continue caring for my patients.

At this time, I don’t yet have a confirmed location to share, but I promise to keep you informed "every step of the way" as plans come together. My priority is ensuring continuity of care and a smooth, thoughtful transition for you.

Thank you for the trust you place in me—it truly means more than I can express. It has been an honor to walk alongside so many of you during some of life’s most meaningful moments, and I look forward to continuing that journey in the next chapter.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions, and stay tuned for updates soon.

With gratitude and care,
Dr. Ensley

This is a difficult announcement for our community.

Johnson Memorial Health will be phasing out our obstetrics services and Maternity Care Center and making other staff reductions, due to unsustainable public and private health insurance reimbursement structures and rising healthcare costs. The phasing out of the Maternity Care Center is expected to take several months.

JMH President/CEO Dr. David Dunkle emphasized that teams will work directly with patients to ensure a smooth transition to partner providers, and the organization will also support staff impacted by the reductions. Expectant parents who are JMH patients will be informed of their long-term continuity of care plan at their next appointment.

Dr. Dunkle called this a difficult decision because delivering babies and caring for them and their moms has been such an important part of our mission for decades. Also, JMH has an outstanding obstetrics team that provides great care for mothers and their babies. The JMH Maternity Care Center has won awards for the quality of care and has high patient satisfaction scores.

Even in the face of these challenges, JMH remains committed to delivering outstanding care and staying an independent, county-owned hospital system. While decisions like staff reductions and cost cuts are among the hardest any organization has to make, by making these changes now, we are creating a path toward long-term sustainability.
