*** Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Launches AWARE Program to Support Safer Interactions with Individuals with Cognitive Disabilities and Medical Impairments ***
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the launch of the AWARE Program, a community-focused initiative designed to bridge the gap between first responders and individuals with cognitive disabilities or medical impairments. By providing officers and other first responders with enhanced training, tools, and resources, the program promotes safer, more informed, and compassionate interactions.
About the AWARE Program:
The AWARE Program is tailored to help first responders better understand and respond to individuals who may have difficulty following instructions, communicating clearly, or processing stressful situations. Caregivers can voluntarily enroll their loved ones in the program, enabling them to receive a 4-inch emblem or sticker that can be displayed on vehicles and/or homes. These visual cues discreetly alert responding personnel that someone at the scene may have communication or comprehension challenges.
When first responders recognize an AWARE emblem, they can adapt their approach—employing de-escalation techniques, clear communication strategies, and an informed understanding of potential needs. This approach fosters a calmer environment and enhances safety for all parties involved.
Positive Impacts of the AWARE Program:
- Enhanced Public Safety: First responders are equipped with de-escalation skills and mental health awareness training to reduce misunderstandings and prevent volatile situations.
- Improved Communication: Officers can more effectively engage with individuals who struggle to express themselves verbally, leading to better outcomes and faster resolutions.
- Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Visual cues provide reassurance to individuals with disabilities, helping them feel recognized and understood during encounters.
The AWARE Program is about building trust and understanding within our community. It’s a proactive way to make sure we are meeting the needs of all residents, especially those who may be more vulnerable in emergency situations.
The AWARE Program is now accepting enrollments from Johnson County residents. Caregivers or family members interested in learning more or signing up can visit the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office to request the forms which need to be completed and returned.
