One of the most harmful myths about eating disorders is that you can “see” them.
The reality is, less than 6% of people with eating disorders are medically underweight. Many people struggling appear healthy, successful, and fully engaged in their daily lives.
Eating disorders often operate quietly.
Someone may still go to work. Show up for their family. Exercise. Laugh with friends.
But internally, they may be dealing with obsessive thoughts about food, guilt after eating, restriction, bingeing, or a constant mental battle that no one else can see.
Eating disorders don’t have a single look. And they are not defined by body size.
This myth keeps many people from seeking help because they don’t feel “sick enough.” But if food, eating, or your body feels stressful, overwhelming, or all-consuming, you deserve support.
Healing is possible. And you don’t have to wait for it to get worse to reach out.
