“Refuge was a place of sabbath while my son was going to his counseling sessions.

Then eventually the call came for me to get counseling, and I was filled with gratitude but also fear. I thought, ‘I’m going to face judgement and shame,’ but instead I found compassion, gentleness, and truth.

Counseling helped me to identify lies I had believed about myself.

Hope Grows at Refuge because it is something that is shared: freely, gently, and without judgment. Until it is something you can carry on your own.”

Your body already knows how to heal. 🤍

That shoulder drop after a deep breath.
Your jaw unclenching when you realize you’re safe.
The sway, the stretch, the exhale.
That’s somatic awareness — being present in your body, not just in your thoughts.

Examples of somatic awareness practices include:
• Jaw tension release
• Body scans
• Orienting
• Butterfly hugs
• Self-soothing touch

These simple practices deepen our connection to our bodies and help regulate the nervous system. Over time, they reduce stress, increase emotional awareness, and build a felt sense of safety.

If you’re not sure how to practice somatic awareness on your own, that’s exactly why we created this space.

🔟 years of !

Which means by default, our staff has laughed more and had more fun than the previous 10 years with her as a part of Refuge. We are so grateful for all that she brings not just to her clients, but through her role leading our Contract Therapist team, and our staff.

Refuge is better because of her decade with us!

Some of the words we wrote down for her were, “Joy-filled”, “fun”, “authentic”, “graciously direct”, and “calming.” If you know Elizabeth, what word would you use to describe her?

Our Story

The vision of The Refuge Center for Counseling, located in Franklin, TN, is to make sure that every individual and family had the opportunity to seek therapeutic resources, regardless of income level.

There are few opportunities for affordable counseling in Middle Tennessee, as many local therapists charge $100-$170 per session. The Refuge Center offers therapy to those who can not afford these fees and bases their fees on a sliding-scale based on income that ranges from $25-$110.

In 2017 alone, we served 2,783 clients in over 18,300 sessions. In October 2017, we provided our 100,0o0th counseling session since opening in 2005.

We firmly believe that no matter who you are, no matter what you have done, no matter what has been done to you, no matter how much your income is or where you live, when you come to The Refuge Center you deserve to have the most excellent care possible with maximum opportunity for healing.
