This is a big day for me. We have been working on this tongue and breastfeeding paper for a few years and it got published this morning!

Ankyloglossia refers to a congenitally tight lingual frenulum that limits the motion of the tongue. Whether the release of a tight lingual frenulum in neonates improves breastfeeding is not clear. Because many of the symptoms of ankyloglossia overlap those of other breastfeeding difficulties, a team...

A nice reminder for this cold weather.

Keeping baby warm in the winter is essential. Use layers, instead of puffy material, to ensure your car seat harness has a snug fit.

We are getting guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices about how and when to use the monoclonal antibody against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). It will be recommended for all infants heading into their first RSV season (October to March) and high risk children going into their second RSV season. I will post here when we find out how we will implement this at the clinic.

ACIP and AAP Recommendations for the Use of the Monoclonal Antibody Nirsevimab for the Prevention of RSV Disease Nirsevimab was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 17, 2023. Nirsevimab is a long-acting monoclonal antibody product intended for use in newborns and infants to....

I see so much iron deficiency from excessive cow's milk intake in children over a year of age. Kids have needed blood transfusions and IV iron infusions. Sixteen ounces is enough. More than that and we get disorders of sleep, gut health and development. I know I am in a state where we wear cheese on our heads, but too much cow's milk is not good for children.

How long do you think it took me to say yes to this conference? I think I’ll get a new Packer jersey for the occasion.

I want to share this because the unprecedented amount of severe infections in children is helping us see that covid is not a benign illness in kids. We have evidence that even mild infection causes lung damage in children even a year after infection. We are also learning that the cellular immune system in some kids is not working well. One of the reasons RSV and Influenza are doing so much damage and requiring so many hospitalizations is due to what we are learning about the damage to the immune system in kids who have had even mild covid.

Influenza A is everywhere now. It starts with headache and vomiting and moves to cough and muscle pain, especially in the calf muscles. The fevers are very high and last 5-7 days, and longer in some kids. There isn’t much we can do except hydration and oxygen. Sometimes albuterol can help with the cough.

We can see bacterial infections co-occurring with RSV and Influenza. We have shortages of many of the medications we need to treat these infections.

I am making room on my schedule for my patients who need to be seen. Call the office as these appointments are created as we need them and may not appear on the app.

Children dying from Strep throat and other immune consequences This virus season has been like no other with high hospitalization rates from RSV, Influenza and now more children are dying from Strep A bacterial infections. This long thread looks at what might be going on.🧵1/

Just a quick note for my patients:

If you have a sick child and you would like to make an appointment, please call. We are adding appointments every day but they cannot be accessed on the LiveWell app because I’m creating them as we need them.

Our Story

This page is based on www.drjen4kids.com, Dr. Jen’s website she (with significant help from friends) created in the Jurassic era of websites, about the year 2000. Dr. Jen is a life-long learner and loves to teach. Her pages, Dr Jen 4 Kids and Dr Jen 4 kids: Breastfeeding Medicine and her group (Dr Jen 4 Kids Breastfeeding Medicine Journal Club) are another way for her to share her love of teaching while engaging with the community.

She is a lifelong Wisconsinite. She has a degree in English from Marquette University where she was part of a special pre-med program which allowed her to get a solid background in the humanities while preparing for medical school. The program unfortunately no longer exists, but she considers it one of the turning points in her life: she was chosen out of high school and therefore knew that (if she didn’t mess things up) she was headed to the Medical College of Wisconsin(MCW) at her MU graduation. Her English degree may have been non-conventional for medical school but the background in the humanities is something she considers important to the practice of medicine. She graduated magna cm laude from MU and at her graduation from MCW was honored with the JC Peterson award for Outstanding Senior in Pediatrics. She did her first year of residency in a combined internal medicine/pediatrics program when she realized that she was too immature for internal medicine. At her graduation from MCW’s pediatric residency, she was honored to receive the Larry Sarff Memorial Award for outstanding resident and Resident Teaching Award from the graduating medical school class. She was selected Chief Resident of the MCW pediatric residency after which she did part of a neonatology fellowship before becoming a general pediatrician in 1998. She became interested in breastfeeding in 1999 and spent many days learning from generous lactation consultants, from mentors at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM). She earned her IBCLC certification in 2003 and became a fellow of the ABM in 2008. As she became more active in leadership positions within the AAP and around Wisconsin, she decided that she needed a better background in program development and earned her Masters in Public Health in 2011, when she was recognized as outstanding graduate of her class and inducted into the Delta Omega honor society. She used the MPH to help found the Wisconsin Breastfeeding Coalition and was the coalition’s first chairperson. She has had the incredible privilege to share her passion about all things breastfeeding all over the US and across 4 continents. She’s written a book, some articles, some chapters and has been recognized as a leader and innovator within the medical systems for which she has worked.

In her free time she decorates cakes, buys shoes, watches the Green Bay Packers, and rides her Peloton bike. Details of her free time, and really mostly only her John Fluevog Shoes, are on her Instagram account, which she fully admits is a bit lame (user name is drjen4kids. Very original.) She is married and has three amazing sons who she make her crazy happy.
