How long do you really need compression after a tummy tuck?
A new randomized controlled trial published in revisited a long-standing question. How long should compression be worn after abdominoplasty?
Patients were assigned to wear compression for 1 month, 3 months, or 5 months after tummy tuck with muscle repair.
The key finding:
One month of compression was superior for patient comfort and early abdominal muscle function, without any drawbacks in abdominal wall stability or contour compared to longer wear.
In short, wearing compression longer did not improve the final result and in some cases delayed functional recovery.
So why has longer compression traditionally been recommended?
In real life, compression is often stopped at the same time activity increases. While longer wear does not change the outcome, it can make weeks 4 to 6 more comfortable as swelling fluctuates.
With this new evidence, a thoughtful approach is:
Full time compression for about 4 weeks
Then selective or part time use during the active days, and remove compression at nights.
This is especially relevant for how I perform abdominoplasty. I have used a drainless technique with progressive tension sutures since 2008, closing all space so fluid has nowhere to collect. In this setting, compression is about support and comfort, not shaping the final result.
Good surgery evolves and recovery guidance should too.
