That stiff, achy base of your neck that never seems to release? It might not be your muscles — it could be your first rib.
When the first rib loses mobility at the cervicothoracic junction, you get:
🔹 Chronic neck tightness
🔹 Limited rotation or side bend
🔹 Upper trap that never “turns off”
🔹 Restricted overhead or forward reach
🔹 Thoracic outlet-type symptoms
Here’s how to mobilize it with just a belt:
1️⃣ Loop the belt diagonally across the shoulder on the side you’re targeting
2️⃣ Hold the free end to create a downward lateral traction bias on the first rib
3️⃣ Laterally flex your neck toward the same side — and/or reach the arm forward or overhead
4️⃣ Hold each end position for 1–2 seconds, moving in and out for 30–45 seconds
5️⃣ Repeat as needed
The diagonal belt angle mimics a manual caudal glide on the first rib — decompressing the CT junction and restoring mobility.
The forward or overhead reach adds a dynamic bias through the shoulder that targets the anterior first rib attachment, making this a great warm-up before any upper body work.
✅ Great for: neck stiffness, limited cervical side bend, upper trap tightness, thoracic outlet symptoms, overhead reach limitations, forward reach, and shoulder prep
⚠️ Not appropriate for acute injury or instability — consult your provider if symptoms worsen
📌 Save this and try it before your next upper body session.
