My sisters and I were raised by laser-focused, successful entrepreneurs. From day one. My mom had to wait for my dad to close the store after her water broke to deliver me. My sisters and I spent our entire childhood in the stock room of their men’s clothing store which we turned into a full scale play heaven.
We crafted play houses out of suit boxes. Our first jobs were steaming shirts, making gift bows, and wrapping presents for customers. The customers all knew us by name. We were in local TV commercials together in the 80s to keep Sunday a day for family when it was scandalous that our mall wanted to open its doors that day. We held our breath when a big box competitor would come to town and then breathe deeply when it didn’t even make a dent given dad’s unmatched customer service and products.
We woke up to our dad crying the morning after a historic flood in 1986 when 3 feet of water and mud filled their store and by all accounts, should have completely wiped us out. Yet, together, our parents rallied, along with the community, and the store came back quickly and even stronger.
If we left school sick, we went to the store to recover on the office floor. If we got an A on that test, we went to the store immediately after school to tell dad because we knew his celebration of us would be big and genuine.
And we loved it.
It was all we knew.
By every sense of the word, we were a family business. And as a result, entrepreneurialism was woven into the constructs of my identity from birth. The only mindset I ever stepped foot into this field with in 2002 was that of being the boss. And I have my incredible parents to thank for it.
After 22 years in my own business, when the new brand, Neurolosophy, launched, they quickly asked where their merch was.
“Wait. Really? Y’all want shirts too?”
“Well of course! You’re our daughter and we’re so proud of you! We want to tell everyone about you!” 🥰
But the reality is, second only to my precious husband, their unwavering support and 45 years of modeling everything that it means to serve others well, with class and excellence, makes ME so proud of THEM!
This picture is more than just a celebration of a new season. It’s a generational reminder that my roots are deep…allowing my reach to be wide.
So blessed. 🥹♥️
