My sisters and I were raised by laser-focused, successful entrepreneurs. From day one. My mom had to wait for my dad to close the store after her water broke to deliver me. My sisters and I spent our entire childhood in the stock room of their men’s clothing store which we turned into a full scale play heaven.

We crafted play houses out of suit boxes. Our first jobs were steaming shirts, making gift bows, and wrapping presents for customers. The customers all knew us by name. We were in local TV commercials together in the 80s to keep Sunday a day for family when it was scandalous that our mall wanted to open its doors that day. We held our breath when a big box competitor would come to town and then breathe deeply when it didn’t even make a dent given dad’s unmatched customer service and products.

We woke up to our dad crying the morning after a historic flood in 1986 when 3 feet of water and mud filled their store and by all accounts, should have completely wiped us out. Yet, together, our parents rallied, along with the community, and the store came back quickly and even stronger.

If we left school sick, we went to the store to recover on the office floor. If we got an A on that test, we went to the store immediately after school to tell dad because we knew his celebration of us would be big and genuine.

And we loved it.
It was all we knew.

By every sense of the word, we were a family business. And as a result, entrepreneurialism was woven into the constructs of my identity from birth. The only mindset I ever stepped foot into this field with in 2002 was that of being the boss. And I have my incredible parents to thank for it.

After 22 years in my own business, when the new brand, Neurolosophy, launched, they quickly asked where their merch was.

“Wait. Really? Y’all want shirts too?”
“Well of course! You’re our daughter and we’re so proud of you! We want to tell everyone about you!” 🥰

But the reality is, second only to my precious husband, their unwavering support and 45 years of modeling everything that it means to serve others well, with class and excellence, makes ME so proud of THEM!

This picture is more than just a celebration of a new season. It’s a generational reminder that my roots are deep…allowing my reach to be wide.

So blessed. 🥹♥️

Me: I just need a bigger office.

God: I’ve been waiting to surprise you with the perfect one! But why not ask for more?

Me: Lord, I’m a working, homeschooling mama of three young boys. What else could I do?

God: Are you asking through your abilities or Mine through you?

Me: (gulp) Yours. ♥️

God:
✅ New business name
✅ New business structure
✅ New team members
✅ New services
✅ New service areas
✅ New opportunities

Me: 😳🤯🥹 You lead. I’ll follow. 🕊️

And with that, friends, we introduce you, first, to our new name, which better captures the growth and vision the company is developing into:

Giddy, awe-struck, and thankful. Oh so thankful! 🥹♥️ We have a new address. But not just any address. It’s an actual dream come true!

I started my private practice in 2003, just one year after graduating from grad school. My first office was in a construction trailer in the middle of a cornfield next to a preschool. A 5x7 rug filled the space, wall to wall, and I’d have to call ahead to have the baseboard heat turned on by nearby preschool workers to avoid freezing with my clients.

14 years and 3 offices later, I enjoyed a beautiful clinic space in a stand alone building shared with two incredible therapists where we could meet the full scope of needs for the families we served. It was perfect. Completely. And then we moved. 🙈 Not just anywhere, but to the real estate market that is Middle TN.

2017 brought our “leap of faith” transition to Franklin, TN where I would be starting over. In a previous post, I shared the miracle of where God planted me as I established fresh roots. Knowing all along, He had another surprise waiting for me. In the location I’d been dreaming of since 2017. ♥️🕊️

And that dream was Downtown Franklin. Repeatedly voted “One of the Greatest Small Downtowns in America”. There’s nowhere like it. My husband and I detour through its streets on many drives home just to taste another little morsel of its charm and character. And now that detour has become a permanent home for The Emphasis Project. 🫠🥰

How amazing it’s been to see our families enjoy it too! With a run across the street to The Coffee House at Second & Bridge for treats before a session, or a short journey down to Sweet Haven for a reward after so much hard work. To stroll Main St. lined with the sweetest shops and food then “stopping in” for a therapy session before heading home.

And all of that before you cross our threshold into the most beautiful, sunlight-flooded space, equipped with multiple tools to support the cognitive, sensory, and motor delights of the kiddos we serve.

Pinch me! When I stop sitting at the table between office sessions, overwhelmed with awe that I get to sit where I’m sitting, perhaps I’ll carve out a window of time to invite you all to see it too! Address in bio. 🥰🌱🧠

Houston, we have a problem. I implore you, as parents and/or professionals, to get your hands on books like Glow Kids by Nicholas Kardaras, PhD and 30 Day Blackout by Stacy Jagger, LMFT . The data is overwhelming that we are playing with cognitive, neurological, and behavioral fire by allowing our children and youth to feast upon screens and electronics.

Attempting to raise three young boys in a gaming-free household has been a colossal parenting challenge. The influences are seemingly inescapable. Yet with each incoming piece of data, my husband and I are reenergized to keep fighting the good fight.

Have you read either of these books? Or tried a digital blackout yourselves or want to? What did you learn? 🌱🧠

Just started reading “In Their Own Way” by Thomas Armstrong, PhD. Not a new book by any means. But highly recommended by like-minded mamas and professionals.

Favorite chapter: Dysteachia. 🫠

Aye, aye, aye. I’m probably not going to change the world. But you’d better believe I’m going to seek to change the world for every budding brain assigned to my path…

Stay tuned. 🌱🧠

Do you know a child who has a lot to say but seems to have difficulty answering and/or understanding questions? Or difficulty staying on topic? Perhaps seemingly unaware of the thoughts, directives, or actions of themself or those around them?

This sweet friend was referred for concerns from the family and teachers that, while they had loads of language and excellent speech, they did not seem to understand questions and often inserted their preferred topic into every conversation, seemingly unaware of the listener’s confusion.

It became quickly evident during the evaluation that formal measures were going to yield “normal” speech and language skills according to the standardized parameters that permeate the field of communication disorders.

It was the governing cognitive system for speech and language skills, the executive function system, where this child’s skills were breaking down. And these skills cannot be effectively measured by standardized means, rather through functional assessments and observations across environments.

Weaknesses in perception, attention, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and self-monitoring became evident through an hour and a half of playing and working together, in the child’s natural environment, with the child’s peers and classroom routine included. As each weakness was suspected, I began using diagnostic therapy measures, based on my observations, to determine how this child would respond to cognitive-based strategies.

The results were fast, effective, incredible. Both, during the evaluation process, and each week since, evidenced by the messages above. So much so that the teachers and school director have seen the progress and asked for support with other children in the school.

This, friends, is what happens when you implement a whole-child, cognitive-based approach to supporting those beautiful, ever-developing brains. 🌱🧠

🌱🧠 PASSION ALERT: Learning differences start with our personalities! As part of our wholistic approach to supporting the children and families we serve, we incorporate a functional understanding of the child’s (and parent’s) personality profile into every assessment and treatment session. And you should too!

Why? Because, in short, using the model of the four temperaments first described by Hippocrates (knowing most of us are a blend of two) the same-aged child with the same diagnosis and the same treatment plan and skill level will have four completely different approaches to the same lesson plan, based on their dominant personality presentations, IF we’re truly supporting each child’s unique needs.

💛 Sanguines Primary Desire: have fun
Emotional Needs: attention, affection, and activity
Dislikes: criticism, not responding to their charm, boredom

💙 Melancholies Primary Desire: have it right
Emotional Needs: stability, space, satisfaction from quality achievements, time to process
Dislikes: disorder, standards aren’t met, the opportunity to fail is high, unpredictability

❤️ Cholerics Primary Desire: to have control
Emotional Needs: opportunities for leadership, appreciation for achievements, something to control
Dislikes: down time, strong authority, not having choices

💚 Phlegmatics Primary Desire: to avoid conflict
Emotional Needs: peace and relaxation, praise, loving motivation
Dislikes: when people are too pushy, too loud, or expect too much of them

This is just the tip of the iceberg! It’s incredible what can happen when parents, therapists, and teachers better understand a child’s organic “make and model”. Contact us for more information and resources on more intentionally supporting the unique personalities in your home, classroom, or therapy sessions. 🌱🧠

The world so quickly moves on. But please don’t let your hearts lose sight of the fact that real people are burying their beautiful children, siblings, spouses, and parents while drowning in the depths and countless layers of unimaginable trauma. One of them being my friend. Whose child’s name means “life” in Hebrew. A life whose absence will be felt throughout every cell of her gorgeous and utterly delightful mother’s body until the day she meets Jesus.

It’s hard to breathe. The pain just keeps coming as you allow yourself to imagine the unimaginable. While simultaneously processing the weight of the fact that your most gut wrenching imaginations don’t even scratch the surface of the unrelentingly shattered reality facing people you love.

There is rest to be found in the truth that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” I join with thousands of weeping Nashvillians who are taking cover under this promise.

I trust my Father. Deeply and completely. Leaning wholly into His rest and peace. Because every human attempt to find either will be hopelessly lost. ♥️

Jesus. Help.

💛💙 There’s no joy like Down Syndrome joy. No love quite like Down Syndrome love. Find a new friend with Down Syndrome and let them show you what I mean. To know them is to love them, and be loved by them. Genuinely and selflessly. Happy World Down Syndrome Day to my “Homies with Extra Chromies”. Love you all so much! 😘💙💛

🌱🧠 Our formal education system is broken, friends. It’s burdensome to lift the veil and look behind the scenes at brain development, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and organic personality constructs and turn a blind eye. You can’t unsee it.

It’s impossible not to ponder, how many “behaviors”, “learning differences”, and even anxieties are merely byproducts of a system that fails to meet beautifully budding brains where they’re at and where they are innately created to go and grow.

A popular life motto is, “When you know better, do better.” We do know better. We have cargo ship loads of data, research, and outcomes across decades that scream at us, “DO BETTER!” Yet our systematically broken educational constructs remain, exemplifying the definition of insanity.

I refuse to normalize the mindset that learning is boring and simply something children must endure. We were born with brains wired to explore, investigate, ponder, question, challenge, design, and create. And to love doing it!

We don’t have to throw out the baby with the bath water. Small changes would yield colossal results. Starting with an EMPHASIS on teaching a child HOW to learn over WHAT to learn.

And that’s a peak behind the scenes at the heartbeat and sessions taking place at The Emphasis Project. We have to start somewhere. And I’m here for it. 🙌🏼🌱🧠
