Take a look into some of our feeding therapy sessions lately! 🍽️

This patient has been working on growing his repertoire of fruits, so we had a great time building a snake 🐍 with strawberries 🍓 & bananas 🍌 in one session & introduced kiwi 🥝 with the other fruits in the next session while building a castle 🏰!

By the end of these low pressure & fun feeding sessions, this patient had touched, peeled, cut (with supervision 😊)and even licked these fruits without protest!

Let me know if you’re interested in our fruit recipes below 👇🏼 & I’ll share them with you!

Christmas is almost here & that means lots of fun themed activities for speech therapy! 🎄🎅🏼🔔

Activities in speech therapy this month included:

-“painting with stickers” while practicing our fluency strategies
-crafting gingerbread houses & gingerbread men while practicing our speech sounds & grammar skills (thanks !)
-practicing our possessive pronouns when gift giving (I gave HIM/HER the rocking horse)
-playing Christmas bingo while practicing our speech sounds
-reading Christmas books while reviewing narrative structure (we love “The Snowy Day” ☃️ “Little Red Sleigh” 🛷 & “The Snow Thief” ❄️)
-learning how to rhyme & match initial sounds while building Christmas trains 🚂

& that’s just what I got on video! What is your favorite Christmas activity? Comment below 👇🏼

If you are a SLP who has always wondered what ASHA convention was really like… this video is for you! 🗣️

This year I decided to stop wondering what ASHA was all about & finally go! It was in Washington D.C. 🇺🇸this year & it overlapped with one of my bestie’s work trips (shout out to ) who just also happens to be a travel agent. She knew all the places we had to see in D.C. so my husband tagged along & we went for it!

It was a blast but also so exhausting! After 2 days of sightseeing, I went to ASHA on day 2 of the conference. I crammed in 6 continuing education courses in one day & saw as much as I could from the exhibit hall. I walked A LOT but also learned A LOT. I made friends along the way (other SLPs are so friendly!) & enjoyed picking sessions specific to my caseload. I would for sure go again (but maybe in a few years!)

Some tips & tricks I learned⬇️
- wear walking shoes and layers! Some rooms were cold and some were warm.
- don’t try to see everything in the exhibit hall all at once. Take several breaks there throughout the day.
- 1️⃣ day is enough! While the convention is a 3 day event, 1 day was enough for me (and cheaper!)
-download the conference app when you register & make your schedule ahead of time on the schedule builder.
-use all the perks ASHA offers when you register, such as cheaper hotels and flights!
-it’s not weird to go by yourself! I met a lot of new people!

Need another craft idea for the season with high trials for articulation!? 🦃

Try my turkey puppet! Each time we folded a feather (paper), we said a word/phrase toward his or her goal, and we wrote the target words on the feathers as they were said so the patient could practice at home 🏠 later!

What you need⬇️
•cardboard (I used old Amazon boxes) cut into circles
•scissors✂️
•popsicle sticks or tongue depressors
•tape/glue (tape worked better for me!)
•color cardstock paper
•pen/marker to draw eyes 👀 & write target words

Let me know if you try it out!

Speak up Therapies is speaking out about National Deaf Awareness Month! 🗣️

In Leviticus 19:14, God calls us to “not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God. I am the Lord.”

Everyone is created in God’s image. Everyone is created to love, fear & glorify God through their gifts and abilities.

At Speak Up Therapies, we aim to remove stumbling blocks and help people who are deaf gain their voice through whatever means possible for them. This could be sign language, or verbal expression with the support of hearing aids or cochlear implants. Every uniquely created individual deserves a means of language that works best for them! 🤟🏼🦻🏼

May is Childhood Apraxia of Speech Month (CAS)🗣️

Before the month ends, let’s talk about what it is & how it can be treated!

✨What is it? ✨

CAS is a motor speech disorder that affects how a child plans & produces sounds to make words and phrases. Some common characteristics include limited vowel sounds, inconsistent errors in speech, difficulties with prosody & rate of speech (i.e speech can sound choppy or monotone)

✨How does an SLP treat CAS? ✨

Frequent sessions with consistent feedback and use of verbal, visual and sometimes tactile cueing. Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) and Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT) are both specific treatment protocols that can be used for CAS.

Looking for a therapist who is trained in both DTTC and PROMPT to provide specific training for your child?

🦋April is Autism Awareness Month 🌈

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition marked by differences in communication, social skills, and behaviors (I.e. flapping, toe walking, stimming), as well as sensory sensitivities (I.e. sensitive to noises, textures and tastes). It is a spectrum meaning there is a wide range of symptoms and abilities!

Speech/language therapy can be beneficial for a child with ASD as it provides supports to help with developing communication and social skills.

Feeding therapy can also be beneficial when the child with ASD has difficulties with eating a variety of healthy foods due to texture or taste sensitivities.

Call today if you are interested in learning more about how we can support your child with ASD!
