In today’s world 🌎, joint attention is HARD. Even as an adult.
✨So what can I do as a parent to help my child learn joint attention? ✨
-Begin to verbalize what it looks like your child may be feeling or needing to help bring awareness to it ➡️ “Oh, you are feeling wiggly? Looks like you need a break. Let’s go outside!”
-Then, engage in play with them. Get eye level with them & teach them how to play more functionally with their toys to sustain attention for longer periods. Take turns. Encourage them. Set a timer for 2 minutes and when it goes off, take a break!
-With time, you may notice you can increase the time on the timer or you may notice you don’t even need it at all! This means your child is beginning to learn self-regulation & joint attention without your help & is well on his/her way to intentional communication.
