Life is about perspective

I was on a post ice storm walk when I saw a pile of dead magnolia branches on our neighbor’s curb.
Brown. Dead. Lifeless leaves clung to broken tree limbs.

As we passed the pile of tree carnage I felt stirred to turn around.

From the other side, I saw vibrant hunter green leaves. Shiny. Signs of growth. Breathtakingly beautiful.

Reminds me of how often where we feel dead, lifeless, maybe like our color has gone out, that we are still green, vibrant, and growing.

Perspective changes everything.

If you are feeling like the dead magnolia leaves, a gentle encouragement that you are also a beautiful shade of life.
Life is about living in the AND, where two sides can co-exist.
Weakness and strength. Death and life. Beauty and brokenness.

So it is with you. Permission to take a look from the other side and notice with a new perspective.

My humanity empowers me to be a better therapist. While my client's experiences are unique to them, I sure am grateful to share in similar sufferings and guide them toward clarity.

Some of my personal experiences include grief, narcisstic abuse, emotional burnout, depression, a mid-life awakening, career shifts, a cross-country move, life transitions, relational trauma, ministry roles, spiritual deconstruction & reconstruction, loneliness, sexual trauma, financial loss, and marriage work. Throw in raising two teenage boys, a plethora of dogs and ferociously protecting simplicity and margin in a culture that says "hustle and go big!" As a practitioner who is ever- learning how to come home to my true self, I consider it a sacred honor to walk with others who desire the same healing and wholeness.

So, yes. I am deeply grateful for the pain, the darkness, the unknowns that have formed my heart to sit with others and reassure them “that this too shall pass and we will move forward together. One gentle step at a time.”

If you’re looking for an in-process therapist who shows up in all of her humanity, I see clients Monday - Thursday at the Pasture Counseling office in downtown Franklin, TN. Warmth, light and tea included.

If you are experiencing seasonal, chronic or major depression, look for the pinholes, flickers, and glimmers of light. They come not in lightning flashes or huge explosions but in a stranger’s smile, a nostalgic scent, a moment of hope.

Gather and linger in these gifts of consolation. Let them warm you during the cold season of Depression’s visit. And please, know you are not alone. I’m here if you need support in the numbing isolation of depression.

Forget goals and to do’s this year. Focus on how and who you are being formed by.

Make margin to play and leave a trail of whimsy in your wake.

When an Anxious part of you gets bossy, saying, “Do everything perfectly!”

Or rushes you from being present

Or tells you to strive now and sleep later

Kindly notice who this Anxious part reminds you of.

Anxiety often presents as a parent’s voice from early childhood, a message you internalized in your body that shows up as tension and a pounding heart.

This anxious part rushes, pushes, and expects much, even decades later.

Get curious the next time this Anxious part starts to boss you around.

What if you let go of someone else’s voice and listen to your own?

Boredom may be a trigger for Anxiety.

When bored, it’s hard to be with your Self.

“What do I do when there’s no one to distract me?
I can’t sit still. Why is it so quiet? Ahhhh I want to crawl out of my skin.”

It’s so dang hard to sit with our Selves when there’s nothing or no one to distract
us.

It’s here, boredom pushes us into panic, feeling stuck, alone, scared and we find
ourselves out of our window of tolerance, experiencing anxiety or panic.

Take heart. Befriend that boredom. Boredom’s invitation is a mature one, asking, “Can you just be with me? Can you connect with me? Can you sit with me and be okay?”

When bored, healthy ways to connect with your Self is to color, listen to music, move your body, talk with a good friend, breathe, or do something creative with
your hands.

You look all around and see wealth, happier families, shiny versions of who you wish to be

When compared, your life seems small and less important

But that’s just Comparison’s loud voice leading you away from right here

Right here, Connection invites
Talking with your kids
Organizing with a friend
Choosing clothes that you feel good in, even when no one is present to approve

Connecting to yourself suffocates Comparison
Breathes out all air polluting your brave growth
Lying that to fit in you must be different than who you are becoming

Connect. Connect. Connect, dear one

Listen to your body
Notice your needs
Claim your boundaries
Grieve that while you grow, you also let go of control
Tidy outcomes
Familiar rhythms

But, oh, how free to walk in and say,
Rather than fitting in
this Connection way fits me!
