While this weekend is a fun holiday for most, it can be triggering for some. By being aware of your stressors and having a plan for self-care, you can stay healthy and maintain your sobriety this weekend.
Here are five tips for staying sober this holiday weekend:
1. Be Okay with Saying No 🚫
Carefully think about the invitations you receive. Maintaining your sobriety is more important than attending the party.
2. Plan Ahead What to Say 🗣️
If you will see people who do not know you are in recovery, plan ahead what to say if they offer you a drink or ask you why you are not drinking. You do not owe anyone an explanation.
3. Have an Exit Plan 🚪
If you attend a gathering where people are drinking, have an exit plan so you can leave if you feel uncomfortable.
4. Take Someone With You 👬
If possible, bring a sober buddy to any gathering you attend. If you cannot take anyone with you, make arrangements to text or call someone, such as your sponsor or a supportive friend, periodically throughout the evening.
5. Create an Experience that Works for You ❣️
Do the things that make you happy during this weekend instead of doing the things you think you should be doing.
