Neurofeedback Frequently Asked Questions:
*What is neurofeedback? Neurofeedback (or EEG-guided biofeedback) is a non-invasive brain training method that helps you learn to regulate brainwave activity via real-time feedback from software which helps guide your brain to healthier patterns.
*How does it work? Medical grade sensors which monitor brainwaves are placed on the scalp with a conductant paste. The brain’s electrical signal (EEG) connects to an amplifier and to a computer where software processes the signal in real-time. The software provides feedback immediately in the form of audio, visual or tactile changes to tell your brain whether the pattern is in a desirable range or not. Using principles of operant conditioning, when your brain produces the desired pattern you are ‘rewarded’ with feedback changes such as video brightening , audio tone, or vibration of a tactile device. With undesired brain patterns, the screen may dim or sounds may fade. With repetition, the brain becomes more balanced and efficient and learns to maintain the more optimal state.
*How can neurofeedback help me? Neurofeedback can benefit many brain-based needs including: *Anxiety * ADHD * Depression * PTSD * Sleep problems * Alcohol or substance use * Improved performance (for athletes, professionals & artists)
*How much does it cost and will my insurance cover neurofeedback? Costs vary based on the number of training sessions, with positive changes reported by many within 5 to 10 sessions, although 20 or more sessions may be required for lasting results. As the brain learns new, more efficient patterns they can be sustained. Some studies show neurofeedback benefits lasting years after treatment has concluded.
Insurance plans vary widely and coverage may depend on your plan and diagnosis. TLC for Brains does not bill insurance for neurofeedback but we can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance company for you to request reimbursement. Contact your insurance directly to inquire about limitations of coverage. Ask your neurotherapist about costs for training and discounts offered for purchasing multiple neurofeedback sessions.
